Oh no…she’s growing up too fast
Published on March 20, 2006 By foreverserenity In Parenting
The other day my four year old was talking to a boy who passes by our store sometimes, he’s the child of another store owner. He’s a very polite child and is very friendly. He plays with my son, and they are around the same age I think, (my son is 11years old).

So I’m sitting on a bench watching as he is at her level, because he was kneeling and she’s there grinning widely and laughing at whatever he’s telling her. He looks over and tells me hello before he says goodbye.

Then my daughter comes over to me and goes, “mommy did you see him? He’s sooo cute!” I blinked and looked at her, dumbfounded and wide-eyed. I asked her to repeat what she just said, because I might have heard wrong. But no, she repeats “he’s so cute” again! I looked at her and she’s waiting for me to respond! All I could do was just agree and said “yes he’s a nice boy and cute too.”

I mean, am I really having this conversation with my four year old? Did SHE just say that? Yes she did!

I looked at her and I said to myself, “My God my baby is growing up too fast”! What does she knows about boys being cute? To her boys are still the enemies, the ones to torture and make fun of and run from. She constantly is at loggerheads with her brother; she tortures him – and his friends, a lot! And now here she is telling me a boy is cute?!

I’m probably just over-reacting but I’m not ready for her to notice boys. Her older sister doesn’t even have a boyfriend yet. Not because I forbid it, but rather out of choice by her which I’ve told her I’m glad about because having a boyfriend at her age is too complicated.

She, the four years old must have heard her sister and her friends talked about boys being cute. That’s where that probably came from. But to think she knows how to say a boy is cute? Wow! I’m still in shock!

And of course there I go questioning if I'm doing everything right as a parent. Why do we parents do that I wonder? Anyway, I'll definately be keeping my eyes even more on this little one. I hope I'm not going to have trouble with her as a teenager. Her older sister is quiet, while she is rather the opposite.

[Sigh] I'm perhaps worrying needlessly though, I know I am. But sometimes she does say the darndest thing! I look at her and wonder how in heaven did she come up with what she just said, as in this case,LOL!

Aw kids, love em and keep on loving them!

NOw I know why I like reading you so much!  You remind me of the stories my grandmother use to tell me.  Her family owned a store as well!

Now about that little girl...........

I've seen a four-year-old convinced that she was going to marry a five-year-old. The older boy was my son. He wasn't too thrilled about it, but stayed friends with her.

(Sadly, he wasn't her first choice. But the "other guy" at school dumped her, or made her mad, or something. Poor pseudo jr. had to be "the rebound guy." Ah, well.)

I remember having a crush on a boy when I was only 5, so....

Hehe. This is something I'm dreading. My four year-old little girl is a big flirt. I mean, come on! She's in the middle of an asthma attack, sitting on the exam table at the urgent care centera and she's FLIRTING with the doctor!!! Come on! I had to do a couple double-takes on that one.

I'll give her credit, she's just being consistent. The girl's been a flirt from the day she was born.

Worked on you.

Yep. She's got me wrapped around her little finger. And has since the day she was born. Me and every other male in her life (all 3 brothers, both grandfathers and her uncles).

Thanks Tova. It is rather amusing isn't it? I'm glad I can laugh about it even though I'm still flabbergasted...to use a word!

Thx Trudy! Yea, we seem to do. Although my first crush was at 12, my first real crush that I remembered. My kid sister teased the heck out of me!

As far as I'm concerned, girls are always older than boys, no matter what their age may be. I can remember being endlessly teased by a very cute girl when I was a pre-teen. She was the first girl who ever threatened to kiss me. I took off running and didn't stop until I was about 17. By that time, I realised I needed to slow down so the girls could catch me

Great blog.
