The Underdogs of the US Sports World

Did you know that the United States were up against Mexico for the Gold Cup this past weekend? Did you know that they won?

Apparently not too many people do. At least those who are NOT soccer fans! To even get airtime on regular television station, even ESPN sucks! For the championship games over the last couple of months, we have had to tune in to Telemundo, Channel 47 and the broadcast is in Spanish. It's a good thing the sport of football (Soccer) is universal otherwise I would be lost!

It's a shame though that our boys on the US Soccer Team aren't celebrated as much as those on regular football, Tennis or even golf. Gosh even Track and Field get some airplay! Soccer gets tossed aside like the dirty wet rag no one wants to use.

My hubby has a theory, it's simply because there are not enough advertisers who will not get airtime the way they would for all the other sports. I think he's right.

Congratulations to the US Soccer team on your Gold Cup win! Hurrah!

I have more respect for an advertiser that keeps the game commercial-free than for an advertiser who needs to interrupt the game. But I guess the advertisers want their full screen.

I didn't even know there WAS a Gold Cup. And I enjoy soccer.

I use to watch ESPN when all they had was Aussie rules Football, and Rugby on.  Those were actually very good shows.

I had not heard of them winning the cup, but did catch where they beat Brazil (owner of more World Cups than any other nation, BTW) 2-0!

Congrats to the Americans on a great victory!

I agree. Although there are so many advertisers blazoned across on the wall/fence surrounding the football field, but yeah, I guess to them full-screen is it or nothing!

Yes! My hubby keeps me on my toes and reminds me if I forget!

Yes, they played the game yesterday for the final against Mexico! They're really good!

Most of the time they do show the big matches commercial-free. I know the World Cup matches were.

I think they are getting better. Younger and more athletic but I wouldn't call them really good just yet. They're playing Argentina next without their 'A' players. I hope they don't get embarrassed.

What a game that was. Feilhaber's goal was an absolutely beautiful strike. It's the type of shot you expect to see in a highlight reel in a video game. My roommate had DVR'd it, and I became fearful because I saw that the length of the recording would have covered extra time. I was biting my nails up until the final whistle, since Mexico kept getting chances at the end.

How about that point blank open goal that Beasley missed. That would have lowered my blood pressure quite a bit.

It was especially nice to see the victory since I'd had to play a game that conflicted with it where we unfortunately lost.

Go US.

In general, I'd prefer that (I think no having that for the last world cup really hurt the team), though they do need a veteran controlling the middle of the field to truly be contenders. Somebody like Reyna, but who isn't as injury prone.

Not to say that the guys there now couldn't fulfill that, but I haven't really seen it from them yet.

oh and the fact that so many players saw field time during this tournament, leading to a successful outcome, is quite a credit to the team's depth.

Yes, for the most part without commercial interruptions.

They're getting there though.
