Life as I Know It; Family; Lifestyle; and Healthy Living!

I didn't read the comic books, but was aware of who the Watchmen were. I wanted to see the movie, because being a kid at heart, I'm all for grown ups running around being superheroes!

I had forgotten how graphic the characters were. Yep, my 7 year old was with me. But the good thing is, my mommy tricks came in handy for those scenes deemed too mature for her.  All in all, I managed to see the entire movie without missing a beat!

The movie was long, 2 hours and about 30 mins...maybe a bit less.  It dragged a bit sometimes, but overall, I was not disappointed, I liked it!  Mind you, I'm a happy-ending type of gal, and I go to movies to be distracted and to have fun looking through the lens at someone else's viewpoint, the end result didn't leave that much of a bad taste in my mouth.

The movie did live up to it's description of graphic, both in the picture and the scenes.  There were some funny moments and others that had me wanting to see what happened next, so the intrigue is there to keep your interest going.  I must say the "who did it" factor was surprising!

Though the 'experts' reviews might be mixed, some liked it, some didn't, some were unsure.  It is science fiction, super heroes, romance and end of the world dooms day thrown in, that made for a highly fascinating movie!  I give it three out of five stars!

John Serba of the Grand Rapids Press gave a great overview of the movie, an excerpt I'm copying below. You can read his review at:  http://www.mlive.com/movies/index.ssf/2009/03/complex_gory_crimefighter_tale.html

The Watchmen are the dysfunctional family of crime fighters created by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons. "Watchmen," published by DC Comics in 1986, ran for 12 issues, later collected in one volume. The story rewrites world history leading up to 1985, when vigilantes have been outlawed and nuclear war is imminent. Here's a who's-who of its heroes:

Ozymandias (played by Matthew Goode) -- Real name Adrian Veidt, a business tycoon made rich by selling his heroic image; one of the world's smartest people.

Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson) -- Real name Dan Dreiberg, a goggled-and-caped nerdy ornithologist specializing in gadgetry; pilots Archimedes, a roundish, owlish airship.

Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup) -- Real name Jon Osterman, the only superpowered Watchman; his exposure to radiation made him able to manipulate subatomic particles.

Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) -- Real name Walter Kovacs, a mentally disturbed individual with an ever-changing inkblot mask; the only Watchman who didn't retire his costume after the anti-vigilante law.

The Silk Spectre II (Milan Akerman) -- Real name Laurie Jupiter, the daughter of the original sex-symbol Silk Spectre; estranged from lover Dr. Manhattan, she teams up with Nite Owl to resume crime-fighting.

The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) -- Real name Edward Blake, a violent, amoral brute contracted as a government agent; his murder is the dramatic spark igniting the "Watchmen" story

How'd you distract your 7yr old?  I haven't seen the movie but my hubby and did and he said there is NO WAY our boys will see it and he's pretty laxed with what he lets them see.

First we stopped by Target and bought her fav candy, gummy bears in different shapes and sizes!  We usually don't eat dinner before the movies on a friday because I'm coming straight from work, so the concession stand's kid's meal and a hot dog for her.  In the movie, would you beleive my 14 year old refused to sit with me because it is not a film he wants to watch with mommy.  My seat neighbours laughed at that and then asked me if I remembered that it might be too much for my daughter.  We had a little chat while she settled.  When the movie started of course I was on high alert but she was busy eating and covered her face at any sign of bloody killings!  She always does!  What I liked was that I could predict when the scenes were going to be racy so I covered her eyes and she allowed me to because we had talked about it beforehand.  When she got tired of me doing that, out came the candy bag and a detailed inspection of the different gummy bears and how they tasted.  I pulled it off thank heavens and she didn't feel deprived and neither did I!  Hoe and let me add she was tired so between eating her belly full, and half resting on me and curled up in her seat, helped a lot!

Oh and the nudity of Dr. Manhattan didn't prove to be a problem because his entire body was blue Itold her he was an alien and to her it was all costumed!  as for my son, he's going to be 15, in high school has already had 'the talk' and I know he's aware of relationships between men and women.

I haven't read very many good reviews of this movie.  I don't usually go by reviews because I like to decide for myself, but these reviews were written by people who stood in line for hours to see the midnight showing...8/10 hated it.

Of course they could be graphic novel purists.

I'm still thinking about it.  I read about the blue penis. hahaha

LOL!  Let me tell you, it IS all blue!lol! I won't do the girlie talk even though I want to!

I'm going to see it on Wednesday.

As for the girly talk, come on Donna, it's CGI! Do guys have to dip their junk in blue dye to get attention these days?

I don't mind the girls getting the treats once in a while....just don't make it a habit!

You will be in for a treat!  Listen Silk Spetre II, I'm a girl, but she's a really good looking woman! Nite Owl is my fav, let me know who you liked!  My son likes Rorchach.

We saw it last Friday.  I have read the graphic novel many times (one of the best ever, as far as I'm concerned).  I thought the movie was an outstanding representation of the basics of the story.  But then, if a movie had been made of the whole novel, it would have to be at least twice as long as it was.

If I had to give it a score, I'd be giving it 4.5 stars out of 5.

Nice!  I would up my score too because it was really that good!  I plan to get the movie on Netflix or buy the DVD when it comes out.  I saw  a big display at Borders but didn't get the chance to go into the store.  I think I will get the book at a later date.

Just got back FS, saw it in IMAX. I throughly enjoyed the film! Haven't read the graphic novel, but I might have to pick up a copy now. I liked the Rorschach character (Haley), tough little guy! When he had his mask off, I though he looked a lot like Danny Bonaduce LOL! I liked Nite Owl II, his character was likable, like a an average joe. And SS II, what a gorgeous bee-hind! In a Ron Burgandy moment, I wanted to be friends with it!

Definitely, not a kiddy flick. Makes Spiderman look like Mary Poppins, as far a violence, sex, and gore. I'll be picking this one up on DVD.

Serenity, the graphic novel is much more detailed and definitely adult-orientated.  But it is well worth owning because it is the type of book you can read many times and enjoy (as I have done).  I'm going to wait for the special edition DVD as apparently it will be the director's cut and include a lot more than was in the cinema release.  I can hardly wait

Nirtro Cruiser, when watching the movie, I was trying to figure out who the unmasked Rorschach reminded me of...  You have hit the nail on the head!  He could have been Danny Bonaduce's brother.

He could have been Danny Bonaduce's brother.

They have about the same temperment too! LOL

Well, I'll probably see it this weekend then.  Several people here like the same sort of reading and movie genres I do, so their recommendations are enough to get me to fork over the cash.

I want to see it despite any reviews telling me how much it sucked. I purposedly ignored all reviews with this movie because I had a feeling most were going to be negative. I had one brother and some friends tell me they hated it while I had another brother and some friends tell me they loved it.

Rose doesn't want to go see it but she's willing to go just for me. That's sweet but I rather we go see a movie we both can enjoy. I have no problem going to go see it alone. Mark mentioning the special director's cut DVD has me thinking maybe I should just wait for that and until then re-read the graphic novel.

All that talk about a blue penis reminds me of the time I explain on one of Joe's blogs the time I had a orange penis.

Just the ticket price to see Tricky Dick serving his third term and the US winning the Vietnam war are worth the price!

You could go that route, but this is a movie that screams "big screen". IMO unless you have a large screen, the experience will suffer on a small TV.

Oh and the blue penis, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's not like he visibly goes around pointing it at people!
