Celebrating my Son's 12th Birthday!

My son finally turned 12 on Friday. He's been looking forward to this birthday all year! He made a big deal out of turning 12, I don't know why and we wanted to make sure we knew it was important to him too.
He stresses out over what presents he wanted. I told him to stop stressing and don't give me a list. I said that I would buy the things I knew he would like and it will be a nice surprise for him. You see he gets himself all worked up and we tell him to stop doing that to himself. Especially since might trigger his asthma.
It wasn't going to be a big celebration with lots of people, it had to be small because I was working on a tight budget. In fact, being able to pull this off this weekend was worrying me a bit because this month we had some large bills to pay and I had to dip into his birthday fund money. I prayed about it and just decided not to worry about it.
A week ago I bought his presents. I wanted to spend $25 dollars total. It wasn't Christmas and I really couldn't get him anything more expensive so I decided to do what I know my mom would have done. I went to the Walmart to see what I could find. I know they had things he liked. And oh boy some things were marked down! You know, people can say what they want about Walmart, but when they give you bargains, they give you bargains!
I managed to get a new action figure he wanted for $6.48, I found a talking, walking robot for $4.48; I've never seen it before and I actually liked it and knew he would too. I found a battle bot or something like that, he likes to build things and it came in small pieces in a pod, don't ask, I just knew he liked it. That was on sale for $3. I bought a spider man bionicle toy for 5 bucks, two spider man collectible cars for .97 each and a airplane that you could shoot and it would soar, for $5. Not a bad basket to put together!
Because I had ordered the cake two days ago, I went to pick it up at the bakery on Friday. It was a strawberry cake, his request and it had strawberry filling inside and on top. Oh gosh it was heavy! That was for $18.98. I know the Publix made better cakes, but theirs wasn't really so bad. Plus a cake like that would have cost about 25 -30 bucks from them. I bought ice cream, cones and sodas. Everything else was already home.
I was expecting four of his friends to come over. My home was a mess because it was the end of the week. I had to 'fly' home to clean up a bit. It's amazing how you don't realize how really messy your home is until company is coming isn't it?!LOL!
Unfortunately my oldest daughter had to go to a football game and one of her friends who was also sleeping over was with her. So her dad dropped them off. But Adam was ok, he didn't want older girls at his party, he said.
I had told one of his friend's mom 7pm and thank heavens they were late because that gave me time to vacuum and pick things up and throw everythng into the dish washer. I put on a celebration table cloth, set the table and hang up a 'happy birthday' decorator sign on the bar. Then there was a knock at the door. His friend and his friend's mom and his little sister was at the door. I had told her it was ok to bring his sister who could play with Amanda. Especially since it's friday evening and if she did'nt have anythng to do, she's welcome to stay and have cake too. And she did. Only one of his other friend came. Unfortunately the other two were a no-show but that was ok.
We blew up baloons and played baloon war. Then we sang 'happy birthday' to Adam and he blew out the candle. We enjoyed eating that cake. Man it was really, really delicious! Everyone got a slice and a cup of soda. While the kids ate and watch cartoon, the mom and I chatted.
Then it was time for ice cream. They played and hang out some more, Amanda played with her new friend and the grown ups continued their conversation.
By the time we noticed it was 10pm! I had said only for an hour since it would be a small celebration and just for cake and ice cream. But everyone had a good time and more importantly, my son had fun and that was good!
We promised to get together again soon and called it a night.

A great birthday story!! The cake sounds very delicious. I remember those "tight years" as well but they were the best I think because we tried harder to make it good.
Thanks! I know, they do don't they!
My mom used to tell me that the golden years were between 3-12... and I found she was right....so fasten your seatbelt!!
Oh boy, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!
