Life as I Know It; Family; Lifestyle; and Healthy Living!

I was watching “Big Love” on HBO on Sunday night. It’s a new original series that recently began on that network.

I watch this show because it’s interesting and amusing to me. Interesting because of the family make up, what they go through - which is normal as any other families, and how they deal with or handle their personal lives and amusing because some of the things or antics they get up to, gives me a good laugh and a rueful shake of the head most times.

Plus I’ve always liked the two main actors, Bill Paxton, who plays the character of Bill Henrickson and Jeanne Tripplehorn, who plays the character of Barb, wife number 1 or main wife. I am not going into the details of the show with this writing, but you can Google it if you want to know more about it.

In one of the scenes from this past Sunday’s episode, a few of the women (not the main characters) were watching the news on television. The person who was talking in the news program they were watching was Condoleezza Rice. In that “take” she was saying “…there are no good terrorists and there are no bad terrorists..” . The women watching nodded their heads in agreement and tut-tut-ted that they don’t know what’s becoming of the world these days.

The scene prolonged in showing Condoleezza on the television screen the women were watching, then I heard a mumbled “uppity”, then two of the women exchanged a ‘look’.

At first I thought I might have heard wrong. But the visual exchange, almost a smirk and nodding of the head of the other woman confirmed what I heard.

I haven’t heard that word in a long time. Then I said to myself, “well, I guess it doesn’t matter how far you are in your life, how intelligent you are some people are still going to cut you down a peg and put you in a place where they think you should be”.

Then I said to myself (and yes, I do talk to myself a lot!LOL!) “I guess since there are people in this world who still think the way some people did in the days of segregation and all that, they will definitely think this way. Ah well…

This is not a poor me, black person, or blame the white person blog – it just made me wonder how many times someone may have thought that way about me, or some other person of color (read this as any ethnic race) who speaks well, shows some sense of intelligence and smarts? Because I’m not exactly a typical black person, and I most certainly do know a thing or two – read intelligence; plus I’m such a chameleon – so proud of my multi-culturism. [And I’m not talking racial ethnicity]

But then I really don’t care two cents whether anyone might think me as “uppity” {I do care what someone’s opinion of me will be (because I don’t want someone to have the wrong opinion about me), on the days when I’m not in my ‘devilish-the-world-be-damn- mood- and-I-don’t-give-a-rats-ass-about-anyone-at-this-moment-mood’. I’m only human after all and I will have those moments.

If someone thinks I’m “uppity” though, I wonder if they would dare to say it to my face? [I guess not cause that has never happened. I’ve had some interesting moments though – maybe they’re afraid I might bitch-slap them! LOL!]

Any way, I thought that little scene was interesting and brought about some reflections although none too deep.

Here is one explanation of the word Uppity:

Taking liberties or assuming airs beyond one's station; presumptuous:

PS:

Now the word uppity can and is used for anyone who is deemed arrogant and presumptuous and takes too many liberties. So these days it’s a ‘reference to anyone word’ [anyone who the speaker may want to insult that is!]

Haha, I think a lot of people would run at the sight of blood, that are they keel right over, so that's just as good!

I saw that particular show.  I didn't hear the word "uppity" though.  I will watch it on demand and fast forward to that part so I can hear it now.....but it makes sense.  I was wondering what they were looking at each other with that "uh-huh" look while Condi was on the screen.

Forever, some people just don't feel good about themselves unless they are putting somebody down.  Race is often the easiest thing to pick on when one isn't feeling particularly clever.

It makes me angry because I think Condi rocks, HARD.  And it makes me angry because there is the presumption that one is only allowed to do so well in life before it's counted against them.

I have to wonder though in all honesty, if the producers woulda picked another Bushy if Condi wasn't one of his choices...

As for the show, my husband despises it.  He said, after we watched the first one, he needed a shower and never to see that trash again.  I actually agreed with him, but happened to catch the fourth (I think) one and saw it got better.....I really like Bill's mom...she is so funny.

It was done so quietly if you blinked you would miss it. It was amusing the way they did it!

I hear ya!

Yep, I agree, Condi rocks!! It sucks when what you try to make of yourself in life can still be counted against you, just because.

Hmmm...who knows!

I can understand his dislike of it. The first show isn't exactly, or wasn't exactly a good primer into the show itself, not all the nuances of it. However, like I said, it's interesting to me, for the most part and you get involved in the characters and end up rooting for a fav one, especially with the deviousness of the leader, Roman. One of the wives being in debt for 70,000 is just like anyone else. How she did it, "just because" and the reasons why are good tools for someone else to learn from.

As for liking the show, I guess it just depends on the viewers tolerance level and how receptive they are to something that is so not the norm. I think Bill's mom is hilarious too! And that husband of hers peeing in the sink! Ugh, ugh, ugh!

Forever, I think "the number of times someone may have thought that way bout you or other person of color" depends upon how many people there are that have that kind of mentality. People that have prejudices ( of any kind) will make remarks that show the kind of person they truly are.

I think the fact that it was on a tv show is atrocious because children learn what they hear from adults.

HAHAHA

I hope no kids were watching it...there is sex and nudity and cursing and well its HBO for crying out loud...at night!

Hey FS.
I have not seen this show, but have seen the promos. I don't have HBO

I haven't heard that word uppity in a very long time. I have heard my relatives in Georgia use that term before, but it isn't limited to blacks. It was also aimed at white women. I know I heard it a time or two as a girl.Tova's blog about Unwritten Rules is a good example.

The show looked interesting.

If a child was watching that show, then the parents have *way* more to worry about than the term "uppity".

I think the writing in that show is brilliant.  It brings out a lot of social issues in a very "real" way.  I have a feeling that you can find real people that these characters were patterned after, because a few of them are just way to weird to be completely made up.

I know it's used by blacks and whites alike to describe a black person who "doesnt know their place.

This is true. It is used by both. It's a word that's come a long way in that it's being used by everyone now, with the meaning still intact.

I was spitting mad when Condi was referred to as a "house n---r" last year, and portayed as a "traitor to her race."

I remeber that article! Yep, it's degrading using it to refer to her as such.

Good grief, why can't people just be recognized for their achievements in life, period? We've come a long way, FS. We've got a long way to go, too. Some things are resistant to change, but change they will.

Yes, I agree with that. People should be recognized for what they do period, regardless of what they are. We have come a long way and yes, some are resistant to change, I guess ignorance is bliss. But yes, change is good.

Oh absolutely! It usually comes out somehow because like my mommy used to say to us as children, ":what you really are inside will show itself outside" and I tell this to my children too.

Oh gosh Trudy, I agree with Tonya and Karma, any parent who lets their child watch this would have a lot more to worry about. It's pretty graphic and is not for children.

It was also aimed at white women.

Yes, I've read that it is. I think older women would say it when referencing a younger woman. Especially if they believe she doesn't 'know her place' or thinks she's better than them.

Tova's blog about Unwritten Rules is a good example.

I may have read it, I have to check it again.

I sincerely hope no children were seeing it either. my kids would sneak down the stairs and watch shows they were forbidden to see, when I worked different shifts in the nursing home. Even kids that are of a certain age are impressionable....ya know? yes, I think there's alot to be concerned about, mostly violence on tv, I do think that violence on tv, combined with the subtle prejudice remarks reinforce racial problems and influence people negatively. P.S. I haven't seen this show so it's a case of just not liking what I heard forever reporting on!

I have never seen or heard about the show, but I dont think i'll watch it after all the descriptions...

It sucks that some people still think this way. It's in the whole world that it happens though. And I'm sure some people have thought about me this way. It doesnt matter they're poisoning themselves with these kind of opinions...

Jealousy is a bad bad thing

To answer the above question: never. Honey, you're a beautiful person and that is all that counts, not what freaking colour you are or what your successes you've had or not had in your life. I just feel fortunate to know you.

That's true Trudy. I'm glad my kids don't do that though. I'm sure they don't, the guilt would 'kill' them, thank God they have good conciences!

P.S. I haven't seen this show so it's a case of just not liking what I heard forever reporting on!

That's understandable!

Oh yes, they are poisoning themselves. Jealousy does bring out the bad in some people!

Maso, thank you- so sweet! And back at ya!
