There probably is a lot of blogs on this already [I didn't check yet] but I'm so excited about this. I've always loved football ever since I could walk and knew that I loved it!

I'm talking Soccer as it's called by my fellow Americans. As a girl growing up on the Island of Jamaica, football is up there as a national past time, with Cricket being our number one sport. My brothers were pretty much into sports with my older brother being captain of his football team and also played Rugby as well. My hubby was also an avid athlete in his school days. His sports though were boxing, Ping Pong and swimming. I even have a cousin who was a swimming champion and several that were on the track team for our country. So yes, it's in our gene pool!

[For the life of me though my kids are not athletic. They enjoy sports yes, but they're more artistic and this does run in our gene pool too so I'm not complaining.]

But yes, World Cup Soccer begins today in Germany. Man I wish I could be there. Or even somewhere where the intensity for the sport would give you that adrenaline high just because you love it so much. I miss that, the comaradie and hashing out who your favourite is and who you want to win and just hanging out with a buddy who would enjoy it as much as you do.

The good thing is my hubby loves it and so we will keep each other abreast of what's going on and tune in to it at home on ESPN who for the first time is dedicating some air time to it - YEAH! I've been on the web and even have posters up on my bedroom door and all over my laundry room so I can keep tabs. I miss the sport because living here in America I have not kept in touch with it like I used to. [I remember as a young girl in high school, running home just so I can watch my favourite team and the gang of kids just gathering around to watch! - My fav English team at the time was Tottenham Hotspurs, and during World Cup action they were my own home team, plus Brazil, Italy and of course England]

Now I have the fever again, and I'm happy that I do.

I'm rooting for the US of course (loyalty here) and Italy and England! Hoorah!

We haven't had television in our house for coming on 2 years now. There have been a few times I have really missed it a lot... World Cup Time is definitely one of them!!! It is the only time I actually sit and watch a whole game.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooo USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA!!!! ;~D

Some people (real enthusaists) are saying the USA does not have a half bad team this year.  Guess we will see.  Yea, I am rooting for the USA first.  I will pick another should they be eliminated.

USA probably has their best team ever. Now the bad news. They are in a real tough group. So while they have a better team than the 2002 team they might do worse.

In the world rankings the USA is ranked 5th in the world. Are they the 5th best team in the world? No way. The cynic in me thinks they were purposely ranked higher and higher each ranking so they would be placed in a tougher group. But again, I'm probably just biased.

I have the fever, too. I entered a few World Cup contests trying to predict all the winners. In 1998 I won a contest where the winner got 10,000 pounds. Well I didn't win it all I came in first tied with 7 others. But I conveniently leave it out when I tell people.

I think if the USA makes the 2nd round it will be a great World Cup for them. If they could somehow get a draw against the Czech Republic or Italy they could make it to the 2nd round.

I think England's hopes rest on Wayne Rooney's injury. If he came come back strong they will contend. Another key is they need to win their group. You don't want to face Brazil sooner than you have to.

Italy is one of those teams like Spain and Argentina. All those teams have tons of talent yet they always seem to struggle against inferior teams. Maybe with the Cup being played in Europe Italy will step it up. I see them winning their group, and if Francesco Totti plays his best, and Luca Toni keeps scoring they will go deep. They have to be one of the favorites to win it all.

Yeah, I can't wait too! I can't remember when England will play although I looked at the schedule last night [while reading it to my husband who was at work]. We both can't wait to see tonight's game and to actually be able to enjoy it from an English speaking commentator! [usually we only pick up soccer on the spanish channels, which I'm grateful for so I'm not knocking it!!]

That's great Ted!

Oh yeah baby!

are saying the USA does not have a half bad team this year. Guess we will see. Yea, I am rooting for the USA first. I will pick another should they be eliminated.

Yep, and yep. I'll always have a second and third team!!

They are in a real tough group. So while they have a better team than the 2002 team they might do worse.

This is true, I remember they were in there with Italy I think.

MANCHESTER! MANCHESTER! MANCHESTER! Oh, wait, wrong group.

Wrong series!!

That would be great but the Czechs are a good team. I 'm rooting for the US of course but the game will be fun to watch!

Gosh it's been a long time since they have won! It was my last year of high school! I remember the days of Maradonna! He was sweet to watch!

I am not that familiar with the sport on the World Cup level, but it seems really exciting so I will try to check it out.

I will be like my oldest son and route for the winners!

YEAH! I love this time! I'm sure France wont win this time, but if they do again, man it's gonna be a helluva partey! hehe. Ok ok, lets not dream... But it is an exciting time

Before watching the England game on Saturday I would of disagreed that Englands hopes rest on Rooney, unfortunately after wacthing the game it would appear they do. We ave a strong squad, some of our best players are hitting their peak. Defensively, and in midfield we are very strong. Unfortunately striker wise we are struggling AND we have a manager that is terrible at making substitutions....or he just has no one to substitute. We shall see if any of that improves for our next game though. SO excited, hehe!

It amazes me that soccer is so huge throughout the "rest of the world" and yet primarily ignored here in the U.S.A.

US citizens tend to be both naive and arrogant in thinking that the only sports the world really care about are NFL style football, MLB baseball and the like.

Meanwhile the rest of the world plays a different game with a ball and stick (cricket), and plays a style of "football" where they actually use their feet to really advance the ball.

I can't say I'm personally that moved to watch the world cup, but I understand the phenomenon it is in the rest of the world and wish all the best to the teams that are playing. As the commercials say, World Cup is one of those times when bullets stop flying, businesses stop running, and the world watches.

You should Kelly, it's a lot of fun! That's what I do when I don't have a particular favourite in a match!

I'm sure you guys are happy about the win! I think they'll do ok, they always do. Let's see what happens when they come up against other teams.

Yeah, I always wondered about that. Soccer is a lot more popular here now though and finally the US soccer team are getting the support they need.

This is so true and always have been this way! The phenom of World Cup matches has always been there for those of us in the Caribbean and in Europe because we just love it! I remember so many past times as a young girl watching the games, going to the games, even having a boyfriend who was captain of his local football team. It's just a sport that is loved by many around the world. Cricket is up there too, but I'm personally not as crazy about it although I will keep tabs on the games.

I stayed up late last night to watch Australia play Japan. I ended up going to bed after the first half finished, with Japan in the lead 1 - 0. The final score ended up being Australia 3 - Japan 1, with all Australia's goals being scored in the last 10 minutes. I must admit I was disappointed not to see them score as it is the first time we've ever scored AND won a World Cup game. Now all we've got to do is beat Brazil (gulp!) and the Czech's and we're through to the next round.
