Say what?!

I’m not sure I like the idea of this at all. In fact, I definitely wouldn’t like to find out that I or my children have been eating foods that have been altered unnaturally.

Unfortunately, from what was said on the news report I saw on Good Morning America today, we most likely have been eating that type of food!

Truthfully, I can’t remember if I’ve heard about this before. If I did, then I must have been sleeping in some other reality!

I didn’t grasp too succinctly the report because the three words, “genetically altered food” and also “you may have already been eating it” and “your kids and their growth” were churning around in my brain – plus I was trying to get out of the house to get to work!

Upon further investigation on the Internet (thank heavens for the Internet!), I found out that.

(1) It was being done just in case there was global food shortage, and
(2) Scientists were experimenting in order to make our lives better.

The report I read also said there were some good things involved with genetically altered (GA) food:

(1) GA food will be more resistant to diseases
(2) These types of food can be used to fight diseases, especially in those countries that really need it.

I’m all for improving our lot in life and even for longevity with the improvement of our world. I’m also for the lives of children and people everywhere being improved significantly, because hearing about starving people is not good. I am aware that there are many people around our world, and even within our own country who don’t eat well, or at all. So improving the food they eat and having nutritious ingredients in it to keep them well, is a good thing. Or is it?

The thing that bothers me is that they (the scientists) are injecting ‘insect-killing bacterium into food, particularly in corn. When they do this though, they are changing the natural benefits you would get from these food. Doesn’t that sound dangerous to you? It does to me!

They are in fact altering the make up of the food. It makes me wonder what effect that will take on the human body? And wait for this, despite all that they are doing, they haven’t tested on humans or animals to see what ‘long-term’ effects all this will cause!

OK, so the people against animal testing and all that are probably up in arms now, at the mention of animal testing. While I don’t agree with animal testing, nor the method they use to do it, there are better ways to do it now, i.e., having those tests done. I can’t give you details but in my simple way of thinking there has to be because all these cosmetic companies claim they don’t test on animals. So whatever they are testing on, they have to had made some advance improvement, right?

It’s been reported that foods containing these GA corns have been recalled by the manufacturers. I definitely see that as a red flag. Obviously more testing is in order for them to know what if any effects these foods can have on us. The report also mentioned that soybeans and canola have been affected as well because of the sprays that farmers use.

Also of concern to me are those companies that just see this as another ‘cash cow’, something to make billions of money from. They won’t consider the benefits or lack thereof to mankind because they will be too busy looking at their bottom line and their profit margins!

I like that there are organizations out there that are helping to make consumers like myself aware of things like this. I’m an advocate of consumers being aware of what is going on as we don’t always know. If we are not aware, how else can we make learned choices? How else can we decide for ourselves without being forced-fed something we wouldn’t choose under normal circumstances?

It was mentioned that our country is behind when it comes to awareness of this industry, biotechnology and it’s overall effect. We definitely have a lot of catching up to do. I’m keeping my eyes and ears peel for more information on this.

As I said before, I’m all for improvement of our world, especially when what we as humankind does changes it so dramatically. We just have to do what we do more safely for all of our sakes.

This has been going on for a long time, and yes, in all probability you have eaten it.  The EU is trying to ban American food for that reason, and been partially sucessful.  But I am here to tell you that there is nothing wrong with it!

My Doc says my nictating eyelids help to protect me from UV light, and my gills make me a great swimmer!

Oh yes, I'm sure I have. I realised that it has been but just didn't pay that much attention. It's like seeing something that has always been there for the very first time.
