And that scares the crap out of me

It does! It scares the crap out of me that an older child, or ok so college age, young ladies and young men would fall for the lure of some creep outside on the street who looks clean cut and well kept.

It especially scares me because I know that my child would probably do it too, even at her age, 17, and she's pretty aware of what goes on out there and I drill it into her often as I'm sure these young people's parents have.

Yet they fell for it!

CBS News did a feature called "Stranger Danger for Teens" where they had a man, white, well-dressed older man went on a college campus and got several students to go into his van.

Then they went to another campus and this time he had an arm in a sling and asked individual students to help him carry his stuff to his vehicle, most of them did. I know they are trying to help someone in need, but the danger that is out there from some one who would hurt them, well, I don't even want to think about it!

Here's the link to that news feature. Link

I know some people might say, how they're just doing that to scare us, but the reality is, there are missing children and teens everyday. An ounce of prevention is worth a moment of awareness so I'll be reminding my teen and her younger siblings about this.

I worry about the kids who carry out groceries at the grocery store and how easy it would be for a creep to park a van in a blind spot and...

shudder.

Yeah, I'm paranoid.

You have to wonder how many might be emboldened by that to actually give such tactics a try, too. I believe it is good to educate people like this, but at the same time I think there are a lot of wackos that are empowered by it.

It's sad to see some college kids lacking in commen sense. I.e. "Hmmm, don't get into that creeps car."

Being vigilant is good, being afraid isn't.

I hope that when i send my children off to college, that they were taught well, and that they have "a good head on them." So that they don't fall for things like this, and become respectable people.

Anywho, I'm neandering off the path, my bad. It's been a very long day, and it isn't done yet.

Very true.

What is the world coming to these days? Hell in a handbasket I tell you!

It's like Cosby said, the birth experience causes brain damage that can take up to 25 or 30 years to heal.

It's the basic "it happens to other people" mentality.

When you have kids, you have to be. It's a scary world out there.

but at the same time I think there are a lot of wackos that are empowered by it.

I realise that too and that's the sad part about it, there are those who do try these type of things and even those who get ideas by watching these types of shows.

Being vigilant is good, being afraid isn't.

Being vigilant is good and being afraid will make you more vigilant.

Hell in a handbasket I tell you!

I think we are all beginning to realise that Xythe!! Sad but true!

This thought is what gets us in trouble with real life, unfortunately.

Ehh, you don't want to let the fear rule you, in my opinion. Let it help you become more vigilant, but don't let it form you into becoming paranoid or something.

I find it very sad that we now have to question anyone's intentions of being a good samaritan.  Sure, he could have been a weirdo, but dont we teach our kids to help those in need?  The Fact that CBS used a lame person to demonstrate how easy it is to fool children is not an indictment on the children, but on our society.

I know Doc. But people have used ruse like that to hurt others and that's the sad part of life these days.

No, not rule you but it makes you more alert instead of going into a state of comfortable denial. The thing is we get comfortable and we think that can never happen to us. When we experience something like that, or know someone close who does, it's a shock to the system. Like the school stabbing that happend at my daughter's school. It was the end of the school day, everyone was in the outer areas getting ready to go home, my child was exposed to something like that and all my hubby and I could think about was that what if that student had a gun, what then? It shook us up a bit. That's what I'm talking about. While we can't predict what's going to ever happen, all we can do is be aware of the possibilities.
