Word of the Year

Did you know that there is a Word of the Year chosen every year? I knew that, as did some of you I'm sure! However, what I didn’t know was there is more than one Word of the Year; it just depends on which dictionary or organization source you use!

Miriam-Webster’s Dictionary, the New Oxford Dictionary, American Dialect Society, Webster’s New World College Dictionary; are some of the sources that choose the word of the year.

The word of the year for 2006 is

Plutoed (demoted or devalued, as happened to the former planet Pluto) – so says the American Dialect Society Link

And

Truthiness, (truth that comes from the gut, not books! -as popularized on The Colbert Report) - so says the Mirriam-Webster’s Dictinary Link

there are more than one words chosen by them too, Truthiness was the number one pick with Google being second!

And

The New Oxford American Dictionary’s word of the year is Carbon Neutral - (Being carbon neutral involves calculating your total climate-damaging carbon emissions, reducing them where possible, and then balancing your remaining emissions – as in Going Green).

In 2005, the word of the year was:

Podcast, was chosen by the New Oxford American Ditionary

Infosnacking – checking email, googling sports score, shopping online and surfing the headlines all this while at work. This was Webster’s New World College Dictionary’s choice.

I like truthiness - if it feels true it must be true, regardless of the facts.

Very close to wikiality - it must be true because most people at wikipedia voted for it being true.

D'oh! Poor Pluto. I actually think it's feelings might have been hurt by the demotion. Or maybe it's happy not to have to deal with the responsibility of being a planet. At least this way it's still the most popular non-planet in our solar system (aside from the Sun, of course). Fun article!

I like plutoed too. As for 'truthiness', isn't it sort of like a decaf coffee - looks the same, tastes the same but gives you absolutely no buzz whatsoever.

I think I'd prefer my truths straight up.
