The other day we were dragged by our son into his favourite gaming store, Rhino. He gets like this every other month. When there's a new game that he wants he's all excited and there's nothing else that he talks about. He doesn't stop raving and coaxing and begging about it until we give up in defeat and take him to Rhino to get it. Of course the coaxing and begging part is each time we have bought him a new game we make him promise not to bother us until his birthday. Yes, sure he won't!

There was something different about our neighborhood Rhino when we got there. They had made some changes, the displays were very different and it looked kind of familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it, if you know what I mean!

We waited patiently on one of the teenaers behind the counter until it was our turn. I commented about the change in decor. I was then told that Rhino has been bought out by GameStop. We were surprised! Infact, there were audible gasps in the store by us and a few patrons (I kid you not!), and it was pretty crowded too.

But yes, GameStop has bought out the Rhino chain of stores. I wasn't too happy to hear that. Because not only was Rhino better in pricing but you could rely on them to come to the phone when you called, have the patience to answer questions, hold a game for at least two days when you get there to pick it up, give you a bargain for your used game and basically do what we find the people at GameStop never do, great customer service! That's a rare commodity in retail these days!

There was only one Rhino store in our neighborhood and it carried all the old school stuff for Sega Genesis and Dreamcast that we had, at least up until my son decided to trade them. Rhino had something for everyone, old and new. Now that they are GameStop, that's no more. They are selling out anything old. That means, no more retro games or systems! That is if you can call the Play Station One and Game Boy Advance retro. Then again....I know some people who would!

Rhino used to carry a varied supply of hand held arcade game and anything that was considered 'old' you could find it there! Alas no more!

I guess because Rhino was owned by Blockbuster who is now in trouble, it's no surprise that they would sell out Rhino to the least favourite gaming company of all time! Blech!

I found an article written by Ben Kuchera that sums up this new venture quite well!
