What caused it - Salmonella in the Peanut Butter

" "All we know is that we've got salmonella bacteria that we found in the environment in the facility that matched the same strain that we found in patients that the states found in jars of peanut butter," said Dr. David Acheson, the FDA's Director of the Food Safety and Security Staff in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.
"The most likely scenario is that the peanut butter became contaminated sometime during the production, between the roasting process and putting the product in a jar," Acheson added. "
At least they found out how it occurred and will hopefully clean up the situation so it doesn't happen again! Or should I hold my breath on that one?

I know! It's happened with our vegetables, Spinach and Lettuce and now this! obviously it seems the codes are not in place where they should be!

Ah, it's always those gram negative bacteria that get ya. Little assholes they are. Gram positive bacteria are easier to kill because they have an exposed cell wall made of peptidoglycan which antibiotics target. Microbiology kicking back on me.
Some good ol' chemicals and heat would've killed them off the production line, though...somebody better start disinfecting machinery more efficiently or keeping pathogen ridden people away from food production places.

You know what's scary?
My girlfriend had already eaten a jar of that peanut butter (Peter Pan PB), before she found out about the poisoning. (Ack!)

That's right! They don't disinfect the machines properly! Even with the cold cut machinary, those equipment need to be properly and thoroughly cleaned!

HA! [as in join the club!] We had polish off a larger jar than I usually buy, since we eat peanut butter a lot, and the smaller jar never seems to be enough, two and half weeks prior to buying a smaller version which we were half way through! So we had our fill! I now realised why I was (and my kids) sick on and off for a while and thought it was just the flu going around! Not a nice thing but I'm glad we're all ok!

Well, considering that the FDA allows a certain percentage of rat droppings in peanut butter it was only a matter of time.
