Why the 'Five Second Rule' doesn't work!

Have you ever been eating something, really tasty, perhaps it's the last bite, it falls to the ground and you quickly pick it up, blowing at it, brushing it off and/or kissing it and raising it upward in the hopes that it's blessed and ready to be enjoyed?
Well those five seconds is enough time for all kinds of germs to get on your food. So you may have just eaten a mouthful of something that will make you sick! Sometimes it can even take just two seconds for it to get contaminated!
If you're generally healthy and don't have too much of a problem healthwise, your stomach acid and your immune system that naturally protects your body against certain germs, will take care of anything injested from that five second rule!
Did you know that the kitchen is the dirtiest room in your home? It doesn't even matter how clean you or your house is!
According to Richard Maloof, the writer, the five second rule is an excuse, one that was made up because our friends were around to see us drop our food, which probably is our last bite! So, it seems we're asking them permission to eat from the floor!

the guilt of having picked it up off the floor spoils it though.
Definitely not when I'm outside, or my kids too, just from off our own floor, so no guilt there!lol!
Gid beat me to that punch line.
Gid's fast on the draw...wait, that's 'quick on the draw'!
Good thing you got that in five seconds, or else we were going to have to change to the ten second rule
! I can sympathise! Any excuse to get the last bite!lol!
It does too work! 'specialy if it's a piece of ribeye or a slice of cheese sausage...
Yummy! But if it's a sticky mess....ewwww! Although, I would just wash it and doze it with more sauce!
!
The five second rule is a vague attempt to make something socially acceptable. Yes, it's an excuse for an otherwise generally unacceptable trait (eating something off the floor/ground).
You got it!
Still, I don't allow my kids to do it. They're going to have to be teenagers before they get away with it.
When they look at you with that "oh no I didn't if I don't have it, it's the end of the world"expression....usually, I say yes, if it's inside our home, outside...no way! I explained to my five year old why I say yes when it's inside..it's our home, we clean it often..blah blah but outside, no way! Although once I didn't let her eat something that fell on the floor since I hadn't vacuumed all week and they were traisping in and out with their friends all week...no way!
The look on his face... but I told him to pick it up and put it on the plate for me to throw away.
I can imagine the disappointment! You know there's nothing like the last bite!
You mean I shouldn't go after that peanut M&M that slips out of my hands and rolls onto the carpet that hasn't been vacummed (sp?) in a few days? Awww.
WEll, if it's your carpet and you're sure there's nothing...er....too bad on it....go fetch!
! Otherwise, like Maloof said, if it's at Taco Bell and it rolled under the table, you're on your own! That made me laugh out loud when I read that!

Isn't it Jack Daniels alcohol he's referring to? Or maybe I got mixed up too!

I confess. I have dropped things and still eaten them.
My baby "eats" things from the floor all the time.

People can cite that 5 second rule all they want, it's just an excuse for being lazy, gross, or cheap. THROW IT AWAY.
LOL.

Haha....like most normal people! We have no clue about these things, we just do them!

Hey, she's home, your floor is clean...or at least it's your mess!
We have a zero second rule here. With two dogs and two cats, our floors---no matter how recently vacuumed or mopped--are unclean. The animals urinate and defecate in the yard. They walk their little feets through it. They walk into the house. No matter how often I clean my yard or my floors, this contamination occurs.Nothing, and I mean NOTHING that touches the floor here finds its way to our plates, I don't care how expensive it is or how long its been on the floor.
When you have pets that do all that in your home, different story! And totally necessary!lol!

Oh yea...people just hate to let the last bite go!lol!

suuuuuurreeee, FS! Next you're gonna tell me that ice cream doesn't lose calories because it frozen!
Actually, it does. Any given food will contribute less calories cold because the body will be required to heat the substance up to body temperature. I doubt the difference is all that significant, but still. It's at least worth an excuse or two.

I think it's probably a little better in HI since most people remove their shoes in the house (we do).
But still, try to stop a baby from putting her toys and lint and everything else in her mouth. Haha. Not possible.

Whohooo! Although I do eat Frozen yogurt these days...when I feel like having some ice cream!

Believe me I know! I remember!
! That's good they take their shoes off. I've tried that, sometimes they don't remember to!
