Why the 'Five Second Rule' doesn't work!

Have you ever been eating something, really tasty, perhaps it's the last bite, it falls to the ground and you quickly pick it up, blowing at it, brushing it off and/or kissing it and raising it upward in the hopes that it's blessed and ready to be enjoyed?
Well those five seconds is enough time for all kinds of germs to get on your food. So you may have just eaten a mouthful of something that will make you sick! Sometimes it can even take just two seconds for it to get contaminated!
If you're generally healthy and don't have too much of a problem healthwise, your stomach acid and your immune system that naturally protects your body against certain germs, will take care of anything injested from that five second rule!
Did you know that the kitchen is the dirtiest room in your home? It doesn't even matter how clean you or your house is!
According to Richard Maloof, the writer, the five second rule is an excuse, one that was made up because our friends were around to see us drop our food, which probably is our last bite! So, it seems we're asking them permission to eat from the floor!

hey!!!!! it is a scientific FACT if you blow on food that fell to the ground and it was only on the ground for 3 seconds or less, it is ok to eat, especially if it is realllllllll tasty food and it is the last bite!

so I'll start carryin' a flask with me. I imagine any germs my food might have picked up in the last five seconds can be dealt with using sterilizing wash of John Daniels.
I'll be gettin' a lot clumsier in the near future! LOL!

hahahah, blessed and ready to enjoy! Yep been there done that...most frustrating that the guilt of having picked it up off the floor spoils it though.

Good thing you got that in five seconds, or else we were going to have to change to the ten second rule.

Was this a point of confusion for anyone? The five second rule is a vague attempt to make something socially acceptable. Yes, it's an excuse for an otherwise generally unacceptable trait (eating something off the floor/ground).
Still, I don't allow my kids to do it. They're going to have to be teenagers before they get away with it. Older one dropped 1/4 of a chocolate chip cookie this afternoon at a military appreciation picnic. The look on his face... but I told him to pick it up and put it on the plate for me to throw away.

You mean I shouldn't go after that peanut M&M that slips out of my hands and rolls onto the carpet that hasn't been vacummed (sp?) in a few days? Awww.
