trying to understand the concept
Published on May 22, 2007 By foreverserenity In Game Developers

I can easily admit that I’m no geek when it comes to technology. I’ve always thought myself of being adept at putting together minor electrical stuff, like, I don’t know…..connecting my computer cords to the tower, the printer and the scanner if need be, etc. I could do minor trouble shooting to get myself out of a jam, then if it gets more complicated I would yell for someone to rescue me.

I will also freely admit that I’m not versed on most computer jargons or technology related ‘stuff’ because that’s not my forte. I am however always interested in what is going on in the world of computers and technology, especially if it is something that will make my life better. Thus I’m always looking out for what’s new on the horizon and the effects it might have on our world.

I’ve often heard people talking about “Sims City” and/or “Sims” and I do know that it’s some type of virtual world/game/existence….but never really took the time to find out since I was not ‘into’ stuff like that, what it actually is. I’ve seen/read a blog or two regarding “Sims” and “Sims City” here on JU. One thing I do know is how excited the users/players are about these games/virtual worlds.

Have you noticed that I keep saying ‘games/virtual world’? That is because I’m not sure if things like that are actual games or are just Virtual World that you ‘do’ stuff with. Is it a game or an experience, a real-life one at that?

The writer of the online article I read, Kristin Kalning, Games editor of MSNBC online, is also not sure into which ‘box’ this creation fits. In fact, she said the press never seems to be sure whether these creations are games or they are just what they are, a Virtual World filled with activities and real-life people? [Latter part my words]

According to its’ creators, Linden Lab, and Beth Gorza this new 3-D Virtual World, Second Life, is not a game, rather, it is an experience!

The Second Life world does sound interesting from what I've read. I would like to try it out, maybe not today or tomorrow, but at some point!

You can call them games or virtual worlds depending on how you want to treat them. Games are set in virtual worlds, but virtual worlds are not necessarily about playing a game.

Second Life, from all the things I've heard about it, is literally having a second life, one that is lived online. I wouldn't call it a game but of course some people can wander around in it like a game. I would call it a social world where you can choose what you want to look like and do whatever. However, things like clothes for your avatar, or furniture for your online residence are paid with real money. The software is free if I recall correctly, but everything else, for customization or to be cool, will cost you.

Of course, this means that if you are innovative and creative, you too can cash in on Second Life, set up shop, sell stuff you designed yourself etc. There are people making money selling virtual estates in Second Life. I saw on a documentary that there's a guy who opened a disco in Second Life and is living off those earnings.

People probably use games like Second Life as a means to escape from the real world and just take a virtual vacation of sorts.

Playing MMORPGs like Everquest or World Of Warcarft is very similar, but RPGs require a lot more work and has more specific goals. Thus most people are in there to game, not start a relationship, even though it can happen during the course of questing together. The line blurs..

Sim City and The Sims (and other sim games) are more like sandbox worlds where you can safely experiment with systems. They would go under the games category. Those two you named are the most popular and also the most complex. You don't need to know how everything works to play them, you can just do whatever and see what happens next. The Sims is just hilarious. Sim City 4 is just simply beautiful and so satisfying to watch your city grow and populate itself. There's more fun stuff with Sim Tower and Sim Farm, and they aren't so taxing at the end of a busy day imho, and they are worth picking up too if you can find them, in budget piles nowadays.

That says a lot Raven! Thx for the clarity!

That's what I understood too! A second life online...quite a concept for those not already living one!lol!

I checked it out. It's basically a 3D chat environment with amusements like casinos and shops where you can buy virtual stuff. I found the whole thing pretty boring. I'll stick with The Palace.

Secondlife seems a little creepy to me and filled with horrible fetishists, but then again my only knowledge of it comes from the the Second Life Safari at SomethingAwful.com (http://www.somethingawful.com/d/second-life-safari/index.php), so maybe I'm not seeing the full picture. But what I have seen doesn't make me want to check it out!
