Life as I Know It; Family; Lifestyle; and Healthy Living!
Dental surgery went well for my hubby on Thursday. I've been playing nurse since he has been in a lot of pain and trying to get used to the upper dentures in his mouth - ouch! I'm just glad that part is over and now all there is to do is for his gum to heal and him to get more comfortable with wearing his new teeth!

Men are stubborn creatures though. He refused to give in to the medication, Percocet, very strong meds that really knocked him down! He didn't want to go to sleep and was walking around the first day, trying not to give in. I had to bully him in to resting when he looked like he was going to keel over! He actually even wanted to drive himself from the dental office. I had to strong-arm him into the passenger side! The kids and I had to watch him like a hawk so that he wouldn't smoke, which he wasn't supposed to do for at least 20 hours. His face was of course so swollen, but the swelling has subsided by today.

His diet has consisted of soup, more soup, and nothing but soup! I bought several different variety so that he wouldn't be bored. The only thing he wanted were the Cream of Chicken ones that had nothing in them, no noodles or such. We have been back to the dentist on Friday, for removal of the denture and shaving for a better fit, and the dentist looking at the incisions to make sure they were OK and they were. And again on Saturday where he learned how to clean the dentures and take care of his mouth.

Now had he been taking care of his mouth, at 50 years old, he wouldn't be getting upper dentures! OK, to be fair, many years ago, he was a motorcycle enthusiast and had a really bad accident that did some damage to his mouth and face. While he has had root canal and other things done, the fact does remain however, that he didn't floss as often as he should have, which he admitted, plus he's a smoker too.

Yesterday he got bored with just plain soup and made some soup from scratch using potatoes and chicken and adding his own spices. I must tell you, I tasted it and it was yummy!

I'm just glad that we were able to have this done for him so now he will wear the temporary dentures until three months when he will be fitted with the permanent ones. He likes his smile so much better now and that is just great!

I feel for him, I know it's painful. I do understand his reluctance to take the drugs though as I am much the same.

I need to find the time and cash to have it done myself as many of my teeth were knocked out in the car wreck and most of the remaining ones are damaged. Ah well, I'll get around to it some day.

I learned the joy of soup when I had the abcess.  Actually, I like it now on occassion as well.  But it can get tiring if that is all you can eat.

And I do understand the drug thing.  The most I took was Tylenol PM.

Yeah, it's pricey and we had to plan it out since we're paying straight up without insurance, my history with dental insurance.....they suck!
