I'm not a lover of most of today's Hip Hop music. Truthfully, I really don't follow the genre, hardly. I say hardly because there are a few artists that I do like because they keep it clean and they remind me of what Hip Hop was once upon a time.

Old School Hip Hop was all about the music, i.e., the beat that you can dance to, sometimes the lyrics were a message, and it sampled music from some of the popular disco, soul and funk music from back in the day! There were cool music coming from the Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, Kool Moe Dee, Salt N Pepa, Tone Loc, Whodini, Run DMC, Doug E Fresh and Beastie Boys! They could throw down! That was also the time when I lived in NY and would go dancing from Thursday night to Saturday night! Yes, those were some great times!

Songs such as Rappers Delight by the Sugarhill Gang, Link , and the Beastie Boys' Paul Revere Link, Salt n Pepa's Push It, http://www.rhapsody.com/player?type=track&id=tra.2527077&remote=false&page=&pageregion=&guid=&from= were quite popular at the time!

Sure the lyrics of some of these were suggestive, some of them certainly were, and they made quite an impact. Hip Hop is a culture, that spawned Rap. Hip Hop encompasses the music sampling as I mentioned above, and usually uses a DJ who spins and scratches the vinyl records..that is when DJs became popular in their own rights. Rap and rappers became a part of the genre that is much more popular and well-played today.

Hip Hop started out with some people not liking it, then many came to love the music. Many people hate the music, some without giving the Old School Hip Hop a chance, much like Rock N Roll, and much like Rock N Roll, the genre will be rocking for a long time!

I love hip hop (as you know) but tend to agree with you about a lot of the genre these days. Most of it is either misogynistic, violent, egotistical and selfish to an extreme. Having said this, there are some artists today who rock my world. True Life, The Herd, Solaa, Katalyst, Butterfingers, The Hilltop Hoods, Koolism and Fast Crew make great antipodean hip hop. My friends in Rastawookie and Reverse Polarities are also excellent.

On the international side, there is not much out there that impresses me these days, although there is still some good music being made. I am still a big Beastie Boys fan although I do prefer their older (and more provocative) material. Artists and bands like The Roots, Roots Manuva, Cody Chestnutt (the Headphone Masterpiece), Dan the Automator, Handsome Boy Modelling School and the Gorillaz (in particular) continue to impress and inspire me.

Then of course there is that wonderful, talented and incredibly good looking Australian band, JC Ronikal. Those guys are going to be huge

A lot of today's stuff sucks major balls. Rap, hip hop...not a fan of those.

Rock and alternative are a lot better. Some Fray, James Blunt...I can live with that.

Incidentally, if you like Corinne Bailey Rae, I'd like to recommend an artist called Stephanie McKay to you. She is an awesome vocalist and a personal favourite of mine.
