Wake up designers!

It's 12:50am and I'm sitting here with the TV on. I'm tuned in to Channel 57 because I was watching Project Runway which has ended. There is a new season of the Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency on - I know, she's a nutcase and I say that very lightly. At least this season she's not as nuts as she was during the first season!

One of her models from last season has returned, and she said the girl is too fat! Let me tell you, this girl is gorgeous! She has not once ounce of fat on her body. She doesn't even have a slight pouchy-stomach or anything like that, not a hint of cellulite! What is Janice talking about?! The model told Janice, "I love my body, I'm not fat, I'm normal!" She is absolutely right!

She looks like she's a size 4! What in God's name is wrong with this picture people? What are the designers doing to these girls that they want them to be stick figures to model their clothing? The model told Janice that she's not starving herself the way she did last season. Janice's last retort was for her to get to the gym, she looked like a hot dog! Oh lord!

There are just too many young girls out there who are starving themselves just because they want to be thin, not slim, slender or even skinny mind you, we're talking reed thin, anorexic! What the heavens name is wrong with them?! Janice tells her she's healthy but that's not good enough!

So Janice took off her size 4 skirt and told her to put it on, if it can fit her she'll eat her words, if not, then she's too fat! So the skirt goes on, and they're trying to zip it up, they didn't show the end result of the zipping up, but I can just imagine that if someone had to help the model zip up the skirt, then it won't be too comfortable! She however IS NOT FAT in my book!

To be fair to Janice, she said she wants her models to be healthy and to lose weight the healthy way and be toned, otherwise the designers won't hire them. While I'm not saying that the models should be really fat or heavy, and that's a whole other market anyway, but they really shouldn't require these girls too be so thin. They starve themselves to keep working and that is so wrong!

Marilyn Monroe was reported to be a size  12,    now that's what I think is average!  and that was back in the 50's...

I wonder what IS the average dress size of the American woman?  Must be around a size 10 now since we're so hard on people's appearances vs "who they are"...

Good article Serenity!

btw,   there seems to be no "happy medium",   we're either tooo fat as a nation,  or starving to be a reed thin model...sheesh.

I think size 4 is plenty small. The thing about weight is that it looks very different on different people depending on their height and physical make up (more muscle = more weight, but a smaller size).

Although I can't imagine being a size 4 and being overweight, even if you're really short.

I'm about 10 lbs overweight right now and I'm in a size 10 or 12 depending on the brand and the year it was made (vanity sizing means that larger clothes are getting smaller size labels to make us feel better, haha). I have a friend who is a 10 and she looks FAB. Not a bit of fat or cellulite on her.

Marilyn Monroe would definitely not have been a 10 if she were alive today, though. Her waist was 22-23 inches and her hips were 35-26 inches. There's no way in hell I'd fit in something she wore!

I think I read that the average size for an American woman is a 12-14.

Models should look attractive and healthy...their bodies are their jobs...but attractive and healthy doesn't necessarily have to be a size 4 or smaller. In high school, at my thinnest (underweight, even), I could only barely squeeze into a 4. Of course, 4s are bigger now, but not enough to mean someone who can't wear them is fat!

I believe it for the US average sized is size 10/12 and 14. And thx!

It's true. Unfortunately many of us let society dictates what we should look like. I'm glad that model was taking a stance that she wasn't going to starve herself anymore. Unfortunately, if she wants to do the career she has chosen, she will have to or become a plus-sized model! Can you imagine, a size 6 a plus size!!!

This is true! Take me for example, I'm heavier than most people think I am because I carry my weight well. When II am on a regular workout I'm even more toned and look much better (to me) so yes, you;'re right.

Yes! That is true. The sizes are a bit bigger now. And the designers are complaining!

I sometimes, ahem, trip on the remote and it accidently changes to the Fashion cable channel and before I can change it back, I get to see a few hours, er, I mean minutes of some of the supposed top models of the world. For the most part, I too find them really skinny and even a bit freaky looking. I prefer women with substance and shape as opposed to Phasmids (stick insects).
