a family one that is!

I've never actually thought about doing it. It was done recently at work, it was a business thing, one department decided to create it for many of the students who were not going to be around anymore, and they actually buried it in a sealed container that everyone can see (a kind of monument no doubt), but not open until ten or so years later. I thought that was a great idea to make one!

The only other place I"ve heard about a time capsule is on television or in the movies, and putting it into our reality is such a cool thing! Making it personal is even cooler!

When you think about it, if you are someone who likes to keep track of your family's history by using a family tree, or scrap booking or even taking pictures, you are doing that very same thing in a sense. I like taking pictures! I've gone through a few camera's, ancient versions and will buy a more modern version one of these days. Until then I continue to use the sometimes trusty but foggy, cellphone camera or for the really important times in our lives, a disposable camera!

As I look at the many years that have transpired since being a child, teen and then a wife and mother and now with photos of our kids, time has flown by! I like showing the kids pictures of themselves, some they have never seen and they get a kick out of those! I'm in the process of putting all our pictures into different albums. I've started it, I have to continue and complete it!

I read on iVillage.com about building a family time capsule, an article written by Tom Polley and am thinking about it, but if I do it, I don't have anywhere to bury it, so I don't think that would be such a good thing! I want to be able to bury it somewhere so we can have the fun of digging it out again in say, five or ten years! He has suggested putting your capsule in an attic or a basement or even in the back of a closet!

If you have ever thought about doing it, here are some of Paul's tips that you can follow!

How do we make one?

It's easy. Get a fairly large, sturdy piece of Tupperware with a tight-fitting lid and a bunch of Ziploc bags for the individual items. The Tupperware should be about twice the size of a shoebox, or a little larger. If you like, you can get smaller pieces of Tupperware for each child, so they can have their own private time capsules inside the big one.

What do we put in it?

This takes a little more thinking. Here are some tips:

Don't put anything in that you're going to need, want or miss in the next ten or twenty years.
Make it personal. The point is to remind you of the family when you open it, not geopolitical events that you'll be able to get out of a history book.
If you're putting in paper, make sure that it's acid-free -- or spray it with paper antacid (there really is such a thing, and you can get it at hobby stores).
Don't count on being able to use CDs, CD-ROMs, floppies, audio and videotape cassettes and the like when you open the capsule; standards for that kind of thing change quickly.
If you're going to use recordings, try to get them on as many different media as possible.
