Brother/Sister can you spare a dime?
My husband dropped me off at work, he does this everyday, and at the end of our journey he asked me if I had money. I had Twenty bucks I said, that's all I have if you want I can go get change to give you half. So in I went to my office in search of change.
i didn't realise this would be such a difficult thing to do. Well, I walked the entire building, it's one level and it's like a very big warehouse. Each person that I encountered to ask, can you give me change, seemed surprise, afterall it's Thursday, a week after payday. I should have known, it's Ben Johnson day. My mom used to call it that especially if it was the Thursday just before payday (and that's another week away too!). This is the day when people have no money to give or spare.
Nope sorry, was all I heard. All I have is two, or three or nope, sorry I have no money. Then as I walked further I thought to myself, why don't I just take a five and give it back after getting change from somewhere else. When I finally ran into someone who could actually give me a five, he suggested someone who keeps the petty cash. So off I went in search of the Petty Cash keeper. Finally, at last, she had change for a twenty!
You might ask yourself, why don't I just give my husband the entire twenty? Are you kidding me?! He's the spender in our family and I want to at least have some money for gas for next week so If I give him all of it, then there's no money for gas. I'm the one that makes sure things are taken care of, big responsibility. I'm sure you wives can relate.
Have you ever heard of "Ben Johnson Day"? I always wondered where my mom got this from and never got around to asking, now it's too late to ask her. Ah well..now my kids hear me say it too so I guess it will carry on!
