After picking up my son from school, I told him I was going to stop at the library because his sister has books that are due today, and we both have DVDs to return as well.

We ran inside of the library after finding parking, which took a few minutes longer than usual, apparently because of voter registration, and it being the last day in our state for voting registration, so many people were trying to get registered before 10pm tonight.

Anyway, my son said, "Who borrows books anymore mom, that is so ancient".  I laughed out loud at this and reminded him that the library is still a very useful place and that I am very happy it still exists. Then I told him that just because he doesn't find anything interesting to read (which is amazing to me that he doesn't) it doesn't mean that someone else can't.

I got home and after running around for a bit, I sat down to watch Sex and the City the movie, for the third time...I'm a big fan! (I promise to send back the DVD Netflix!)

In one scene Big said to Carrie, "...you must be the last person in NY who still borrows books from the library..."

That made me laugh out loud again!  First, I hadn't realised what Big said to Carrie before this (and this is the third time watching it - no connection!), [& re - the conversation with my son] and I can't believe they said that in the movie too!LOL

But seriously folks, are we, my little one and I, and Carrie the only ones who still borrow books (and now DVDs) from the library?  It (the Library) is still useful isn't it?  I do see so many people who do go to the library, not just school groups, or daycare classes or mommie and me folks with their kids, but grown ups use it too!  I have noticed however the grown ups who do use it are there just for the use of the Internet as well as periodicals and/or  magazines the library subscribes to!

Hmmm, I really can't imagine not having a local library anymore!  I love books, and going to the library has always been one of my favourite past times, one I have introduced each of my kids to.  My eldest still goes and borrows book, on her own now, especially for college.  My son, he's another story! I do drag him there with us, trying to get him to read more.  He is a good reader, an excellent one, in fact, but I keep reminding him [read: hammering in his head] how good it is to continue to read no matter how good you are, learning new words, developing his vocabulary, etc., etc., etc., etcetera! [I love the King and I!]

I'll still go to the libray no matter that I gave in and now rent from Netflix, and also buy books over the internet as well as at my fav bookstore, Waldenbooks/Borders, or peruse old books at thrift stores....Sigh....antiquated my ass..

I still go to the library.  It's one of my favorite things to do.  My boys like to go though.  There are still some fun things that don't plug in.

Hell No!!! We still go....

I am lucky. My library just happens to be at the end of my block so I let my 8 year old go by himself now to check out a book. He loves it and it makes him read. I hope libraries don't go anywhere.

That's one great thing about my library.  They just insituted a system that emails reminders of your due dates.  That has helped me tremendously.  That two weeks goes faster than you realize.  Plus I can renew them at home on my computer so the fines have gone down considerably.  Not that they were ever a huge amount but it doesn't take long for 15 cents a day to add up if you check out a lot of books.

When I was first starting out, we went to the library all the time.  it was an easy and cheap way to read books.  Now that I am older, and have some money, I like to buy my books so that I can have them - my own liberary so to speak.

But libraries serve another purpose (other that for those with little or no money to buy).  They allow you to sample.  IN this day and age, many can get that on the internet, but still not totally (Amazonn has a preview for most of the books).

As long as people love to read, there will be libraries.  And when you find the book you really love, you can always buy it.

Would we be so lucky with Blockbuster Video.

Nope!hahaha

I like this too. Definitely a good way to see if you want to own a book or not!

Oh they do that here too. I love the fact that I can go on line and renew everything we borrow. But they also don't let you keep some things.  Then you have to make sure it is back on that date or else.lol!  They are pretty flexible here at the same time that they are sticklers for their feels.

I love the library.  When I lived in Osaka, the Central Library had a fairly good selection of English books and one of the classes I taught was at the same station.  LOVELY!

I haven't figured out the library in Tokyo.  My local branch is quite nice but no English books.  I went to the Central Library in Tokyo.    It's one of those libraries where there were more books in the stacks in back and to get them you had to fill out a form.  Quite a few English books though.  Not so much for light reading.    It's not much of a hang out place.

Libraries in Calgary rock.  They have a great public library system.

I'm lucky enough now that I can get some books from the schools I'm subbing in.  Good thing I like children's lit.

Best library I have EVER seen was at a public elementary school in North Vancouver.  I forget the name of the school.  The librarian had good selection of books but also an incredible collection of just about everything.  It was like a combination, library, old-style study, museum.  It was the kind of place that would really fuel a child's imagination (or an adult, because it did for me).

That is great!  I like it when a library is like that!

I'm not much of a reader of books so the Library will be the least likely place to find me, even with the DVDs. My kids are a bit like me in that sense, but they are getting more interested in reading. I just never liked it. I go only when necessary to be honest, mostly for the internet and sometimes for the DVDs for the kids.

Toni and I go to the library lots.  Toni is a voracious reader and usually goes through three or four novels a week.  If we had to buy books instead of using a library, our house would be very crowded indeed.

I love the library for all the interesting reference books it has that I'd never think to buy myself.  Our local also has a very good collection of poetry, which I'm ever-so-slowly working my way through.
