Life as I Know It; Family; Lifestyle; and Healthy Living!

I’m sure you’ve all heard this already but it’s ok to be fat! Say what? No kidding! Yes, it’s ok if you’re carrying around a little extra weight on your frame.

Why? Because it means you will live longer. Yes, the scientists from the National Center for Health Statistics and the National Cancer Institute says overweight people die less often than people who die from other causes. (I don’t have a link but it’s been all over the news medium this past week). So apparently people die from smoking and other diseases than they do from being overweight.

Wow! I couldn’t believe it when I heard that one. So, me going to the gym and trying to get rid of my extra “shadow” that I’ve been carrying around is now acceptable? Yeah! (Sings) “I’m gonna live longer, I’m gonna live longer”! Longer than the gaunt-looking, lypo-suctioned, big headed, breast implants, skinny girls that are all over the magazines and television! “Wahoo hoo!”
OK time to get back to reality. I would say if you are really obese, you really should, for the sake of your health, ignore this news. This might be good news to hear, but it doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t continue going to the gym and eating more sensibly. This news isn’t carte blanche to all the food I can eat. No way. It just means that we who have some meat on our bones don’t need to be such fanatics about our size, or the way we look. (Or this should read) we no longer have to want to look like the American ideal. Somehow we do end up comparing ourselves to others whether we like it or not.
Also people should be aware of their own Body Mass Index (BMI) to see if they really need to do anything about their weight. What is BMI? Well for those who don’t know, it’s a chart that shows the height and weight measurements used to indicate if your weight falls within a healthy range. BMI is also used internationally. I do think however, with these new results from the National Cancer Institute, the BMI chart should be made over.

So, this chart will tell you if you’re of normal healthy size, underweight, overweight or obese. Looking at this chart, those who are obese should lose weight and those who fall in the very obese category should lose weight now this is what the chart reads now:
THE BMI INDEX
Underweight BMI less than 18.5
Ideal BMI 18.5-25
Overweight BMI 25-30
Obese BMI 30-40
Very obese BMI greater than 40

While the fact that being fat won’t necessarily kill you if you’re healthy. The thing is to do what‘s good for you. If exercising and keeping fit makes you feel better and loosing weight is your goal, then keep on doing it. That definitely will make you live a better life.

It was a flawed study. They did not look at prior history. There were too many "skinny" people in the study that lost weight because they were suffering from a terminal illness. They did not take this into account which skewed the results.

Really? I didn't hear this at all. I did hear that they didn't take into account children though.

I heard it on the radio, they interviewed a doctor. I wish I had more details. But to be honest I don't trust a majority of the studies. I majored in math and took a course in uses and abuses of statistics. There are so many ways to make the results represent what you want them to represent that it's hard to trust anything you hear

Oh yes I agree with you here. Sometimes these reports are the results of people "tweaking" things so that it goes in their favor. You know, create mass panic or attraction. Hence this report has been making all the headlines all week!

Take a look at my blog http://loseweightsafely.blogspot.com for the truth on that one. Being overweight not only reduces life expectancy, it also increases the likelihood of dementia in old age.
