For the dessert lover.....

Sometimes it’s hard not to resist them too. However, I’m getting good at saying no or eating only a small portion, enough to satisfy that craving to taste that sweet, delectable, sometimes sinful treat! Hmmm, yummy!

I’ve learned to still have my cake and eat it too, har, har! Here’s what I do:
I read my labels, and I know that’s boring and tiresome, but you would be surprise at how helpful this is.
If the dessert in question (and this goes for anything) is more than 200 calories I won’t eat it; unless it’s during the day, not at night, and I haven’t met half of my caloric intake yet (for me it’s about 1200-1300 per day).

Or I will share it with one or two persons, usually my kids are husband or all four of them. That might not sound like much fun but believe me it’s worked so far for me!

I sometimes save up to treat myself to something that I love and I will indulge once a week in eating it. Especially if I’ve been good, exercising everyday and not indulging in anything else, I just eat what I want for my special treat.

You can also make the dessert yourself, whether it is cake, ice-cream (and they do have those ice cream makers now), jello or fruit based desserts. I’m not much in to baking, so I don’t bake that often myself. My oldest girl loves to and she is often the one who will bake a cake for all of us. She hopes to be a Chef one day (as well as a singer) and we love to eat her varied and interesting creations.

Do you know that you can use applesauce instead of butter or margarine when you’re baking? You can also use regular or low-fat milk instead of cream in a recipe that uses it. Also, when it comes to eggs, you can use egg substitute or take the yolk out of the egg and use only the egg whites. One thing that I really loathe to do and never do is use sugar substitute. In my opinion regular sugar is a lot healthier and taste a lot better than sugar substitute. I use sugar sparingly.

For those who can’t do that though there is a wide-assortment of sugar substitutes on the market. One that I’ve heard a lot of good things about is Splenda. I haven’t tried it yet, but perhaps I will one of these days!
