Can you do it?
Published on August 24, 2005 By foreverserenity In Just Hanging Out
Would you be feeling too deprived if you didn’t watch the news or knew what was going on in the world for a day? If you tried to only watch programs that makes you laugh like comedies or other enrichment programs on the television or even bury your head in a book for an entire day; or just focus on family and didn’t listen to the news of the day, could you do it?

I’ve done it before and believe me, when I went back to the television to catch up on the news I missed I turned it off in disgust because it made me so sad. All they seem to report about are the terrors and mishaps that happened here and all over the world! While knowing what’s going on in the world is important (and of course I want to know) I just think its disheartening hearing nothing but bad news.

That’s why sometimes I keep my television tuned on to the Style Network or the decorating channel or just watch cartoons with my daughter and then listen to the major news in the evenings. I remember once I was watching the news and my daughter and son were in the room with me; I can’t remember what they were reporting about but it was something horrible at the time. They both got so upset about what they heard I had to calm them down and switch the channel! Man I was surprised at their reaction. They actually felt scared and thought the bad thing experienced by the person being reported about was going to happen to them. That was the last time I had the news on with them around!

I tell my older children that it is important to know what’s going on around them but I don’t want them to be totally focused on all the bad things that happened everyday. Now I only make them aware of some things, like the weather (and even that can be scary) and any major news in Science or news like that.

So back to my original question. Would you be able to turn off and tune out to the news of the day? Or would you feel too deprived? I think this says a lot about us if we can’t do it don’t you think?

I guess it would be just like some of us are so addicted to the Internet or to food or whatever gives us pleasure. Some people would most certainly go into withdrawal!

I dont watch news on TV any longer (except the local).  I do read it on line (OMG!  I am too INternet Savvy!).  That way I can peruse the headlines and read what I want. It is not as depressing and Fox News has an item called "Out there" which is news of the weird!

No, I dont plagarize them, but it gave me my inspiration!

I also dont do Newspapers any longer.  I lost all faith in the local when they were presented with a case of segregation in a local school division and sat on it.  We call them the Times disgrace.

Last week I went to an area where nothing on TV is in a language that I can understand. Not a newspaper was avilable either. No Laptop with me to check on my news sites.... But you know what? With all the madness that has been going on here lately, it was a welcome break. I think I should do it more often.

Forbid the thought Doc, you plagarize?! Naw....I quite enjoy YOUR weird bits!

Unfortunately this is all too true. The news media seems to only report some news and not all and they often times love to sensationalize the news they report. It’s all about ratings and nothing else.

Not only did I turn it off but I practically threw it out. The only thing my TV is good for is collecting dust, and the occasional playstation game. I stopped watching the news when all they talked about were bombings *ie: the sucide bombers that blow themselves up in grocery store, killing and injuring many* in foriegn countries. Yes it's unfortunate, and unfortunately seems to be a common occurance over there.

I remember occasionally watching the news, as a child, and I don't recall any of that horrifying stuff. I remember weather and politics and that was about it. I don't like being bombarded with the whole worlds mishaps on a daily basis... Sides if anything really truly is going on it spreads like wild fire by word of mouth...

I turned it off and I enjoy keeping it off. I don't miss television a bit. (Saves money too!) Err.. except for certain TV shows, but they don't run anymore anyway.

I've taken a break from newspapers and haven't watched tv in months... I was recently asked a question 'where do you get your news from?' during a survey, and my answer was Joeuser, mostly.

I've gone with out TV since October of last year... it was provided where I lived and when I left I would of had to get cable or satelite and pay money! I don't have the extra money, and I'm glad I don't I find I spend lots more time reading then I did when I had a TV to watch.

When we first talked about dumping cable, it was me (not my kids) who went into a panic. The plan was to just go to what we could get off an antenna, but when we found out how much it would cost to get an outfit that gets a clear picture, we dumped that idea too.

Now that we have gone almost a year with no tv, I can honestly say that out of the things I miss, television news is not one of them. I really missed the olympics, and the Breakfast Club reunion... and I really miss TV versions of some of the movies I like but can do without the nudity.

I guess what I miss most is keeping up on the latest trivia.... which, let's face it, isn't exactly worth the money or time spent.

I do enjoy going a day or so without paying attention to any news whatsoever, but it's not something I'd be willing to give up permanently. ;~D

That's amusing! I guess JU has become quite a source of information hasn't it?!

Oh......most definately reading is much more pleasureable!

I can relate! Not just the kids too, my husband as well!

Me too Ted. I would really be climbing the walls if I had to do it permanently!

It's true the TV news sometimes scares us and disturbs our peace of mind, especially that of children and it becomes hard to bring the mind back in good mood. I appreciate you take so much care of your childred and censor the media and release only what is beneficial for them. But insofar as we elders, we should try to be always equal-minded to everything whatever may take place. I've composed a poem as below:

Look equally

Time is temporary
A fleeting cloud.
Everything on this stage,
Will not remain loud.

Sometimes make may noise,
Will vanish into silence,
May or not give you poise,
Take it equally by patience. __ Wish you good/better/best lucks ever. --- VIJO.
