Which is your favourite?
Published on April 21, 2006 By foreverserenity In TV Shows

I was watching the E network sometime ago and they did a program about “Chick Flicks”. It got me laughing and brought me back to remember my favourite one – Pretty Woman.

How can you tell a film as a “Chick Flick”? If you had to drag your husband or boyfriend to see it is top of my list! When I turn to one of these romantic comedy/drama on the television he groans and complains. Why do we have to watch that? Haven’t you seen it too many times already? It doesn’t matter how much he protests, I usually win Heehee….

Along with Pretty Woman I loved anything with Julia Roberts and also Hugh Grant – they’re usually romantic and fun to watch.

I also liked Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill……Waiting to Exhale, How Stella Got her Groove back.

So which Chick Flicks do you like?

How can you guys tell when it’s a “Chick Flick”?

I love Love Actually, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Just Like Heaven (fairly new with Reese Witherspoon) and I second Notting Hill. I actually think all of these movies can appeal to men because they are sure to throw in lots of humor and are not as purely female targeted as some. Now, don't yell at me, ......but I have yet to see Pretty Woman or even Sleepless in Seattle! I get a lot of flak for this, but I think I was just too young when these were popular, and never got around to renting or catching them on T.V. yet, although I have been seeing Pretty Woman commercials on TBS lately Maybe I'll catch it this weekend.

I separate "chick flicks" into 4 camps.....

the worst of the chick flick category I call "We're Great/Men Suck"... these are the "Fried Green Tomatoes" "Let's Give 'em Something to Talk About" kind where all the women in the flick are heroes and all the men are weak, abusive scum.

Then there are the "Ok, the flick is made well, but I'd still rather take a bullet than sit through this dribble"... "Sabrina", "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days"...

Then there are those that I'll watch with Pam, but only because I love her that much. ;~D "Ghost" & "Everafter" are examples of these. There is just enough humor to keep me interested, and I don't feel like scum for being born without ovaries by the end of the movie. ;~D

Then there are the ones for which I get kicked out of the "guy club" (once again). These are the ones that I not only sit through because of my love for Pam, but I have actually been known to put on and watch (gasp) while I'm all alone and can put on anything. "Sweet Home Alabama", "Father of the Bride", "Heart & Souls" "Casablanca", "It Happened Once Night"....

Course my article on Chick Flicks got me forever banned from the guy club.... But if I remember right, got me an invite to sit with you... so who needs the guy club with an invite like that anyway. ;~D Link

Me it's musicals and costumes. I love Moulin Rouge, Chicago, Sense and Sensability, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Dangerous Beauty, Amelie, Like Water for Chocolate, Chocolat, Dangerous Liasons. oh and I love Muriel's Wedding. I think that counts as a chic flick. The Princess Bride, Ever After, My list is long. Old movies too - Gone with the Wind, How to Marry a Millionaire, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, It Happened One Night

I've never seen waiting to exhale or how stella got her groove back.

You are right.  You violated the first rule of the guy club.

But now speaking off the record, I like your rating system.  And while I will deny every seeing any of them or kowtowing to my wife, I liked most of them.

But to answer Forever's question.  Ok, how many people died?  How much blood?  What about the hero dying to save his love?  Do any chick flicks have these ingredients?  I think not.  They are all about emotions and smooching and that stuff.  As Henry says (sorry Dharma), "Why cant we just play catch?"

Guy films are about cliffhangers and nail biting action!  Chick flicks are about love and smooching and touchy feely.  And no real man (other than Ted) would ever admit to liking them.

So I will not admit to liking Sabrina, Fried Green Tomotaoes and ghost!

Nope!  Not me!  I am still in the Guys club.

If you love costumes and musicals,  try "Down to Earth",  NOT the version with that Chris Rock,  but the OLD one.  Great color and costumes!  and humor! Think it was Rita Hayworth in it.

I love musicals too,  the more color the better,  like "Easter Parade" with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire.

And Singing in the Rain with it's ballet numbers.

For current flicks,  Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail, Meg Ryan in Sleepless In Seattle,  Erin Brockwich! gutsy woman!!  Center Stage just for the dancing! EverAfter for the costumes and the "new attitude" of Cinderella!! and also love the ending in that one!

Chick Flicks, man, I love those when you gather up with your girlfriends around pop corn or any junk food, I do that with my Mum alot, and My Dad, well he sleeps throught it, we had to wake him once cuz he was snoring too loud... heh... I think he can join the guy club, Dr Guy?

Anyhoo, my chick flicks, gee too many, anything with Drew Barrymore... 50 first dates, the Wedding Singer, Ever after... I also enjoyed Monster In Law with J.Lo, what else, mmmm, Heh, I'm a little girl at heart so I am alot into cartoon, do these count??

Great topic Serenity, I could be enumerating endlessly, lol!!

He is automatically a member by reason of his gender.  He can only be kicked out by violating the rules!  See parated for more info on that part.

If the lead parts are predominantly female, then it is a fair bet its a chick flick. Usually, I avoid these like they're plagued, but occasionally, a good one comes along and, at my wife's behest, I grudgingly watch. I can't actually remember the last one I watched and enjoyed... Oh wait, I think it might have been Serendipity, but only because I like John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.

btw.... "How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days" as a date movie, should be renamed, "How To Lose Your Guy in 10 MInutes" ;~D

I think the best one is Scent of a Woman. Robert Deniro.

ha ha - that's a good one Ted.

Hey I thought of a whole new subcategory in chic flick's. Dancing movies. I love them Dirty Dancing Havana Nights, Dance with Me, Shall We Dance? Strictly Ballroom

Are you seeing a pattern? I don't care how cheesy the rest of the movie is I love dancing movies. I have to go see the new Antonio Banderas one.

I don't as a general rule like chick flicks. I'm not sure why, they just make me want to gag. I told my husband he should appreciate me more because I don't make him watch girly shows. But alas, he doesn't know their torture so doesn't know to appreciate not seeing them.

I did like Gone With The Wind because the cinematography was cutting edge at that time...and the characters are fun. But its not something I can watch over and over.

Yes Locamama, I forgot about those!! The dancing movies, especially the ones you mentionned, Havanna Nights I dont think I've seen this...
