Another celebrity meltdown
Published on November 21, 2006 By foreverserenity In Blogging

Have you heard the latest uproar? I guess if you haven’t you must have been out of the country or something. You all know Comedian and Actor Michael Richards who is best known for the role of Kramer on Seinfeld, loved by many people because he made the Kramer character loveable and he was so good at it too!

Richards was doing a show at a comedy club this past weekend and ended up offending quite a few people when he reacted badly to a group of hecklers watching his show. The hecklers who were black, got the brunt of Richards’ anger when he went off on a diatribe of racial remarks that were thought to be a part of his act at first, until people began to realize there was no punch line and what he continued to spew wasn’t funny anymore.

In the same news report I was listening to, they said that Richards went on David Letterman’s show to apologize and one of his comment was “I’m not racist”.

I thought about that for a minute and I said to myself, “Well, if you’re not racist, how come when you’re angry all that stuff comes out? Where does all that hate come from?”

I can understand anger and saying things in the heat of the moment, swear words, calling people names, even if the infamous “nigger” comes out, OK, you’re letting off steam. And even then it’s like, OK, you’re talking to a friend and you cuss at him and call him a nigger? That would make me wonder what kind of friendship that is and was that necessary.

I don’t understand though; when I hear of other people who have done what he did, if the person says they aren’t racist, why say things like that in the first place? Michael Richards didn’t just say “nigger this or nigger that”, he made some really terrible remarks, including “…that’s why we used to sling you up on trees…” (not verbatim) and other derogatory remarks.

If he’s not racist, how could all that come out? That’s a lot of ‘things’ to be bottled up inside of him if he isn’t racist!

They showed a brief snippet of the man who said it all started because of what he said to Richards, he shouted out to him “I hear that you’re not funny” (or something like that – it was so fast I didn’t hear quite clearly), and he thought Richards would handle it in a comedic way, the way most comedians would and was surprised at his (Richards) reaction.

While all this doesn’t bode well for Richards, it won’t make me hate him. It’s not nice to hear what happened, it's sickening that there are people who can look at someone else and think this way, yet I feel sorry for the guy. He’s going to have a hard time living this one moment down.

I’m willing to chalk it down to a slip of the tongue, or him being tired, or high, or drunk even! I’m even willing to chalk it down to him going through a moment of temporary insanity where he has had a string of bad experiences with quite a few black people bothering him?! Hey, anything is possible.

Sorry Michael, I tried to find excuses for you, they just don’t fly. I guess you have some explaining to do, which you’ve already started doing anyway. Yep, your world will be turned upside down for a while, but then you’ll be back in the bosom of the public’s arms once again.

Just another episode of hate that will be looked on as unimportant, nothing to make a big fuss about or as usual, just plain denial.

Aw yes, just another celebrity meltdown.

Life goes on and so do we. Yep, it really does.

I think the man's not any good at his profession and I don't care how bad a day he's had or whatever. He should be able to deal with hecklers! I get racial slurs and insults hurled at me EVERY SINGLE DAY on my job, yet I have to suck it up and not respond in kind.

And Richards should have to too.

The 3 biggest racists in America

why are they the "3 biggest racists?" there are many who have said bad things concerning race. aren't the worst racists the ones who actually act upon it every day?

I call these three that because they do more to keep the divide between blacks and white alive than anyone else I can think of.

I found the entire 2:47 long uncut version. Richards called them niggers several times before they responded in kind.Check it out.

It was said in the story that they began to call him a cracker to the point where he flipped out, and this is when the camera was turned on.

Indeed he went way over the top and I think he probably should get whatever is coming to him. I just find it hard in this day and age, where the word is mainly embraced in the black society and used as a term of endearment, to think it is so much worse of a word than cracker is.

Regular networks, ABC, NBC, CBS

cmon now, there are no black or minority news anchors, actors, ect? I will mail you a dollar if you find 3 white people on BET in one day. I bet you can find more than 25 minorities on any given day on the stations above.

It became necessary when little girls up to this day would prefer to have a white doll over a black doll. This is the sad reality Elie. It's no joke. I watched a video the other day of someone's project wherein they put a black doll and a white doll in a room. They asked little girls at pre-school and elementary schools to play with the doll they think is better. In almost all cases they chose the white dolls. They also asked them to choose which one was the nicest and the prettiest, they chose the white doll once again, 99.9 % of them did. What's wrong with this picture?

Was this test in a white community? Because I bet if you did the same test in harlem the results would differ vastly.

It is such a double standard now a days. The hecklers were calling him a CRACKER! So he is not allowed to respond in term because he is white?

what I heard was before the recording started they were calling richards racially charged names. This is not in defense of what he did, what he did was unprofesional and uncalled for.

Just want to let the truth come through.

neither one of the linked videos starts before the rant, so i don't see how anyone can say what was said before the rant started.

I actually was thinking about who is in front of the camera as in actors, etc., not journalist. Hey, journalism has come a long way in being all inclusive to all, not just blacks! As they ought to be!

BET, even I dont' know the make up of BET. I would have to check it out the only way I know how, via public records.

I have to see if I can find that link. I don't remember where they did the test. Actually, the parents of the children who chose the white doll all thought they were doing a lot to build self esteem in their young girls and were surprised that they made the choices they did.

But Caracarn, the reality of situations like this is, what self esteem is in these children and what they are taught at home. I have to build up my 5 year olds self esteem a lot, because she has curly nappy hair and gets teased a lot by her counterparts at her daycare who have long straight or curly fine hair. Her preschool is a combination of races, majority latino. Little kids can hurt each others feelings.

This is what those who were there were saying, they were waiting on the punch line, cause in the beginning they were laughing, heck, I laughed when I heard some of it, but like I said, that changed. If they were so bad, those two people should have been kicked out for being disruptive but from what I heard, it wasnt' like that.

The thing is, I'm not trying to make a big deal, my question was, if he says he isn't racist, why would you behave like this? That's my point in writing this. I just wondered if the hate isn't there, where did all that come from? That's why I chalked it down to frustration or something esle.

" I watched a video the other day of someone's project wherein they put a black doll and a white doll in a room. They asked little girls at pre-school and elementary schools to play with the doll they think is better. In almost all cases they chose the white dolls. "

And for every preschooler that picks a white doll you can go to the mall and find a 'wangster' that dresses, talks, and behaves in every way to emulate black people. For everyone you find that thinks black people are 'less' you'll find five that wishes they could dance or sing or rap or whatever like black people.

That phenomenon is about low self esteem and poor self-image, not racism. God knows if you give teen girls dolls with big tits or small tits they'll pick the one that is "stacked" too, probably. They'll probably pick the one without blemishes over the ones with. It's hack science that doesn't prove a damn thing about race.

What are the people who know this man in every day life saying? When people come forward that say they've heard him saying this stuff any other time, I'll tend more to believe he is a racist. Maybe he was hopped up on goofballs, I don't know, but I don't believe you can construe from this one thing that he is racist.

...and btw... on one of my recent posts I pointed out that a certain Senator was caught on national TV using the N word, and is still in office. He's voting on LAWS that effect black people. The DNC had as their featured speaker Al Sharpton, who has more than once expressed antisemitic ideals and even incited violence against Jews.

So, before you start saying one instance should wreck someone's career, think about it. If that's true, there's a lot of people, including Jesse Jackson and other beloved civil rights leaders, that need to sit down and shut the hell up. The Dems have featured people who fought civil rights legislation, who have been members of the KKK, etc. Lets remove them from office if Michael Richards needs to be punished for life.

Were all the little girls white? Did they merely choose the one that most looked like them? Given that young children don't generally have strong consideration beyond the borders of self, if the answer to the first question is yes, then I don't see this as being all that relevant.

I agree with Elie somewhat because I know now a days these three are at their worse with some of their actions. Sometimes what they do doesn't do good for blacks at all. But they have in the past, in some cases, made a difference when there wouldn't have been.

"Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

That was written by currently serving Senator Robert Byrd (D) of West Virginia, the Senior Democrat and soon to be President pro tempore of the Senate. Should his career be over?

They weren't all white. Even the black girls picked the white dolls as being "good". When they would ask them (the black girls) which doll looked like them they would look longingly at the white doll and then reluctantly say they looked like the black doll. This original experiment had been done over thirty years ago and from what I understand even after all of our "progress" results changed very little. It's sad.
on Nov 21, 2006
As far as the Michael Richards thing, he apologized but it won't be forgotten. I think people tend to confuse the person with the character they play. I caught a bit on David Letterman and the audience wanted to laugh at his apology. I think they just expected him to be "Kramer" and not be serious.

So the question is is this any worse than the Mel Gibson rant about Jews? What is the difference in coverage? Is it because Mel has more power and is a bigger star or is the difference that the rants were directed at Jews vs. Blacks?

It's hack science for people too stupid to see the holes in it. When America is doing everything it can to emulate black urban culture, especially young people, you'll pardon me if I find it an odd assertion.

By the way, if it is true, why are dolls being made so multicultural now? There's no law that says they have to be. The next time you see a kid in the mall screaming for Bratz, ask yourself why they'd want a doll they find less attractive.

Again, as I said, he said he isn't, yet we're not just talking saying nigger Baker, where did all those other stuff come from? The part about blacks being strung up on the trees or being dragged, those are not good memories for anyone at all. He could have said anything else and still have the crowd in his favor, he chose to say those things, that didnt' help at all.

This is true!

Trued, it is about self esteem. I thought I said it was. Pardon my error, it is about that. However, what leads up to that. When one doesn't see too many images, albeit good ones about people who look like them, young minds are impressionable. And while that may be the parents fault for some of them, for not giving them enough positive images to identify with, the steps that lead up to this type of thinking are quite blatant. It might not be blatant racism, it's just ignorance.

...and btw... on one of my recent posts I pointed out that a certain Senator was caught on national TV using the N word, and is still in office. He's voting on LAWS that effect black people. I do agree with Elie that what Al Sharpton does, some of it, does lead to divide.

While I don't agree with Jesse and the whole posse of people jumping on the bandwagon, and I'm not surprise that they will use this in their favor, (are you?) it's up to people to make the right decisions and choices without them influencing them. You know how extreme that crowd can be and as I said before, they don't speak for all blacks or minorities. As for Richards, I still love his Kramer character and will still watch is act if he's given the chance to. He nows see the err of his ways. The thing is to admit it, say you're sorry, examine yourself to see where all that came from. I guess he's doign al lthat

Were all the little girls white?

They were all black. I dont remember if there were any other races involved.

Did they merely choose the one that most looked like them?

Only one chose the black doll.

Given that young children don't generally have strong consideration beyond the borders of self, if the answer to the first question is yes, then I don't see this as being all that relevant.

Re-read my comments on this. They don't have strong consideration of self, true, they would have chosen someone who looked like mommy, they didn't. They chose what they know. The relevance of this was my response to MMs not seeing the necessity for a Ms. Black America pageant. Necessary upon inception, may not be necessary now, but I cited that as an example of why some may think it still is.

I'm not sayign there haven't been major improvements, far from it, just that on both sides of the coins there is still so much problems, so much hate. When will it all end? When one is met with adversity, tryign to spin it in the other direction, a positive one, would be the best outcome. Most people don't think this way.
And some aren't even allowed to spin it this way.
