Life as I Know It; Family; Lifestyle; and Healthy Living!

At least I don’t think I could. Because that would mean giving up what I like to eat, meat, although most of the times I eat chicken, but once in a while I like to eat red meat. I try to eat liver often, because it’s good for me with the iron it provides and which I lack, so says my doctor last year. I have no idea if that has improved, and I have not been taking vitamins! I think I better start doing that ASAP!

I do like to eat vegetables and healthy foods and I do know doing so does not a Vegan make me, however, from what I’ve seen on television, at the movies, and read in books, magazines etc., that means also being careful what you put in your mouth, making sure they are not by-products of meat (if I’m wrong about that, enlighten me!). That I would find hard to do. I don’t even count my calories (although I do watch my food intake – I eat anything I want but not too much of it!), how would I be able to keep an eye out for all the details in every ingredients I eat?!

Does being a Vegan means not wearing fur? Not that I own any, at least not any more! I had one piece, a mink shawl; I gave it away when I moved from NY. But I also had pocketbooks and coats lined with real animal hair, was that cruel of me I wonder? I don’t have those anymore, given away too. I do still however, own a couple pieces with fake fur, so I guess that’s not so bad! And I really don’t like the stories I hear of what is done to animals to get their furs, I’m not a supporter of that at all!

Being a Vegan seems to be quite a responsibility. Not that us carnivores don’t take responsibility for what we eat, despite what some people think PETA)! There are those of us who do care enough about the world around us and try to make changes to make it a better place!

I was actually watching a reality show and that brought on this thinking. The Two Coreys on A&E. I loved watching those two guys when they were younger and was curious as to what they were doing now. Corey Feldman and his wife are Vegans and everything they do seem to revolve around being Vegans.

I might consider being a Vegan, but not at the expense of my meat!

Once at the movies I sat next to a vegan couple who were on a get-to-know-you date and they kept talking about vegan mac and cheese and vegan soap.

I think it would next to impossible to find a way to consume absolutely NO animal products.

I am a pretty picky eater and not a big meat fan, but I have been trying to branch out lately and I did eat ribs this summer and I didn't take the ground beef off a few of my Sonic hamburgers!

True Vegans are great people, they just get on with their life like the rest of us - gets my vote, but not my active participation. If that floats their boat from conviction, well done them its hard (frankly impossible) to be 100% Vegan in every sense of the word.

Social Vegan's are another matter - you know the type all glitz and mouth making a "statement" in their cocooned little world. Irritating little weasels, but if it floats their boat and keeps them out of my way, I can live with that, takes all sorts to make a world.

I'll stick to my one pound triple burger and fries cholesterol special of the month, and die happy at 70. As another blogger wrote recently, why live healthy and long if you spend the last 10 years in a Home having your diper changed because your brain gave in and resembles scrambled eggs. Kind of an extreme view, but he had a point in a strange way

I have good intentions of going meatless one day a week but it never seems to get past the good intentions stage. I have my moments when I feel bad like when we went to the stockyards and I looked in those longhorn calves eyes then my friend reminded me I had brisket for lunch and it was really good.

This blog makes me think of Dandy Warhol's song Bohemian Like You.

singing - But if you dig on Vegan food,
Well come over to my work,
I'll have them cook you something that you'll really love,

Cause I like you,
Yeah, I like you,
And I'm feeling so Bohemian like you

As I sit here in a Cabrito and Dos X induced haze, I must say I agree with you Serenity. If God didn't want us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat?

Maybe they were really hungry!! I mean, at the movies and discussing vegan mac and cheese...

How did it tasted to you? Not that bad right?!

I didn't see that blog but I have to agree too! I've known a few who have done everything right, only to end up in a way they didn't wish for as they get older. Sometimes it is good to just have some fun with your life! Not that it is wrong to live a healthy life. But giving yourself some fun times is good too. That means you can eat your ice cream without feeling guilty!

I looked in those longhorn calves eyes then my friend reminded me I had brisket for lunch and it was really good.

That's not nice of her to do that! Did she eat the brisket too? Just wondering!

Also, deciphering an American food label is darn near impossible (and I am a scientist familiar with all those scientific sounding ingredients, preservatives, emulsifiers, etc.). What gets me is "natural flavorings." What is in natural flavorings? Often something from an animal made its way in there

I know! That's darn near impossible to do isn't it?! Unless you are going to grow everything you eat yourself, that's the only way! And even then you still have to get food from the outside.

So, why vegan? I feel better.

I have read that many vegan feel this way. They feel lighter, as you say, less sluggish and healthier. I have no doubt that you will lose weight and for me, that's definitely a plus and the reason why I would do it!lol! But it's really difficult so I don't think I would be a vegan, maybe a bit of venture into vegetarianism (such a word?) but I do love to eat my meat, so....

For now, I'm vegetarian most of the time, vegan when I can be, and just accept the moment when meat is on my plate.

To me that's good, you're not all crazed and putting yourself and others out in doing it. You accept what you can do when you can, that's a good thing!

For those who choose this lifestyle, more power to them for being so disciplined.
However, I have no interest in being a Vegan myself. I like chicken, I like turkey, and I don't think I can ever quit ice cream.

I will say that I am eating more fruit now...and eating less junk. As to how long this trend will last, who knows.

I like food. I like tasting it and eating it. I do not like worrying about what is in it. So I will not be a vegan, or a vegatarian, or any other food limiting lifestyle. If you want to, fine. But, if you are coming over for dinner, you better tell me beforehand, and let me know a meal you can eat. With brands. And we can do the shopping together, if you want, because I am not going to worry myself over whether what I have cooked has a stray animal part in it!

I don't really eat meat, but I never tell people ahead of time.

I just eat what I can on the spot and then eat whatever later when I go home.

Last night I went to a BBQ, and they had hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta salad, and deviled eggs. I ate deviled eggs, pasta salad, and a hamburger sans meat. Worked out just fine. I don't expect people to make concessions for me.

Of course, it is probably not that easy for a vegan because they are so much more limited on what they can eat.

Karma did a blog on this a while back.  What struck me about it (I think she is vegetarian - not vegan), was that the only way a person can be one is via modern medicine - i.e. Vitamin B12 supplements.

SO I agree with Zydor.  If you want to do it, great!  Just don't proselytize about it all day long.

I've never been a vegan and personally consider most to be hypocritical. Why? Because, well, if you don't like food made from animal byproducts, did it not occur to you that the cow manure used to fertilize your organic produce is, in fact, an animal byproduct? But I AM an on again, off again vegetarian (on again, right now). I love the taste of meat, but, frankly, I don't like what it does to me.

I have never gained weight on a vegetarian diet.
I feel lighter, generally happier, and more motivated.
I think clearer.

So why do I eat meat at all? Well, why do alcoholics drink?

Aha...good questions Geezer! Sorry I missed you the first time!

I don't think I can ever quit ice cream.

MMMmm, me neither. Although I don't indulge in ieating as much as I used to but I could never give it up entirely!

myself over whether what I have cooked has a stray animal part in it!

Oy, I know, that's a lot to worry about! On the show, the wife called the lady from PETA who was visiting them to make sure she WAS Vegan!lol! Corey Haim actually ordered a pepperoni pizza during the course of the meal because he was so hungry! It was hilarious!

See Tex, you're good! This is nice of you to not make a fuss, you accept things and you make it work in your favor! Some Vegans or Vegetarians would probably make a fuss!

Vitamin B12 supplements.

Really?!

Karma did a blog on this a while back.

I dont' remember the details of the blog but she probably had some good points on being a vegetarian!

Good point! One not too many people, me included, think of!

I have never gained weight on a vegetarian diet.I feel lighter, generally happier, and more motivated.I think clearer.

This is a fact Gid! When I focus more on vegetables and fruits, I do lose weight faster. I still however, eat meat. I just cut my carbs!

So why do I eat meat at all? Well, why do alcoholics drink?

! Not just alcoholics, but people who do like to drink! I want a beer right now!

I eat meat in order to do my part in the reduction of the raised-for-meat population. Imagine if we stopped eating them! They would all just keep living, and emitting whatever it is they emit!

A good enough justification!! I will not justify why I'm a meat eater! I just love it though!lol!
on Aug 06, 2007
Actually, that's why I really eat meat. It's better than not eating meat, for me.
